Happens every season. Usually a team tells a guy not to report. Lack seems to fit that discription.
If Parsons continues to play at his current level in the ECHL then Lack is just getting in his way.
I'm sure Lacks a great guy and all but He is not an nhl backup out side the anomoly of 1 good year in the AHL and One adequate year for the Canucks .
Your not paying him the amount you are to back up at the AHL level. If he cant perform at the Nhl then do him and the Flames a favoir and cut him loose so he can head back to the SHL.

Once again:
Teams do not just ask players to not report and hope they agree. The only way the Flames could get rid of Lack is if he failed to report or breached his contract in some other way.
Yes maybe Lack wants to go back to Sweden however considering he showed up in Stockton, played well his first game, and makes $2.75M it's not going to happen.
Parsons can play a lot of minutes in the ECHL this season and graduate to the AHL next season.

Yes they have in the past. There have been threads on CP about just this. I tried using the search but cp dosent go back past a few months it seems. Teams in the past have told players not to report and just stay at home and collect a cheque.

Yeah I'm not buying this either. And even if it has happened before, if I owned an NHL team and my GM did this he'd be fired quickly. Good luck trying to lure free agents to your organization when you give up on players 2 months in and ask them to breach their contract.

He has already reported and played a game in the AHL.

The only time recently I can think of that this has happened is Zach Kassian with Montreal, but that was only because there was the Christmas trade freeze and Montreal asked him not to report to the AHL (because they had traded him to the Oilers, which wasn’t made official until the freeze lifted two days later).
Generally players that don’t report are suspended, and I assume any player that is ever told to stay home is an absolute cancer in the room or about to be traded. They can also terminate contracts through waivers, so I can’t see why they wouldn’t just do that instead of paying someone to sit at home.

Contracts can only be "terminated by waivers" if they both sides agree to mutually terminate or if there is a breach of the contract by the player.
And there have been examples of teams telling a player to stay home and not come to practices but that is not grounds for terminating a contract. I think the most recent example was the leafs telling Jared Cowen to stay at home so he would be healthy for a buyout in the summer. As long as the team continues to pay the player they told the player to stay at home there is nothing the NHLPA can do about it.

If anything combustable, you're thinking of cases where teams and players mutually agree to terminate a contract. That's just not going to happen here given Lack isn't going to throw away nearly $3 million.
If teams telling players to just not report was actually a thing, the NHLPA and PHPA would be all over it.

The Canadiens told Laraque to stay away from the team in 2010
https://www.nhl.com/news/montreal-ca...raque/c-514451
Quote:
The Montreal Canadiens are showing enforcer Georges Laraque the door and the emotional tough guy says it was a classless move given the emotional toll of everything that's going on in Haiti.
General manager Bob Gainey said Thursday that Laraque will receive the remainder of his US$1.5-million salary for this season and will remain on the roster, meaning the Canadiens can only carry a maximum of 22 players the rest of the season.
Gainey met with Laraque prior to the Canadiens' practice Thursday and gave him the news.
"I told him that he would not be continuing as part of our group for the rest of this season, for reasons of lack of productivity and distractions to our group. We felt our goals were more achievable to continue without him as part of the group."
Laraque was in the second year of a three-year, $4.5-million contract that included a no movement clause, which means the Canadiens could not place him on waivers or send him down to the American Hockey League.

What else are they going to say?
Really though, there isn't any reason to see him back up with the big club unless Rittich and then Gillies both lay eggs.
He's on an expiring deal, its not costing them much and he isn't a prospect.
Barring a total collapse of the two aforementioned goalies, that's likely it for Lack at the NHL level, at least with the Flames.

Lack is still a potential asset, and the best case scenario would be for him to light up the AHL and get his confidence back, while at the same time have Rittich play so well in the NHL that he makes it impossible for the Flames to send him back down.

Rittich and Gillies are far from sure things at the NHL level. No harm in getting Lack some games at the AHL and if he does find his form again, at least it's an option. It does seem unlikely though. The excuse that his recent play in CAR was the fault of his position coach looks to be spin more than anything else.

I am still not ready to concede that this is all “spin.” It could well be, but this would not be the first time we have seen a goalie take more than a few months or even a season to rediscover his form and confidence. Devan Dubnyk wandered the desert for two full years, and played for three NHL teams in that time before he re-established himself as a bona-fide NHL starter in Minnesota.
I am not confident that Lack will find his way back to a successful NHL career, but it is also far too soon to write him off.

Lack is turning 30 in january though, so the clock is sort of ticking if he is to resurrect his NHL-carreer at this point. Yeah yeah, Tim Thomas, I know.

"Far too soon to write him off"? That's an exaggeration. I think he is perilously close to having played his last NHL game. I am not writing him off yet but his NHL career is at the tipping point.

There is ZERO reason for the Flames to ask Lack not to report. It makes absolutely no sense at all. There is absolutely no benefit.
Teams ask players to not report only if they are a negative distraction to the team. By all accounts, Lack has worked his butt off in practice, and on more than one occasion Gulutzan has commented about it. He is also known to be quite a character in the locker room and generally well-liked by his team mates.
Lack also has just this year left on his contract. It isn't like the Flames are planning to buy him out this off-season, and need to ensure he remains healthy to do so.
Parsons is going to get the bulk of the workload in the ECHL. It doens't make much sense having him as Gillies' backup where he is not playing as much. The more games Parsons gets in the ECHL, the better off his development will be.
Gillies should still be expected to get the bulk of the load in the AHL. I don't see why anything changes on that front.
It is actually a good thing that Lack is there. It continues to provide Gillies with a goalie that can ease some of the burden from him. All goalies go through rough patches, and it should be comforting to know that there is a decent backup who could cover for him, plus Lack has a lot of NHL experience and can be a positive mentor.
I just don't see a gain in asking Lack for a mutual termination other than freeing up a contract spot that the Flames don't need, or freeing up some cash and a fairly negligible cap hit. Asking Lack to stay home is a sure way to end his NHL career without a chance to get himself back on track. I think it would be beyond classless in this instance, as all we have heard with anything regarding Lack is that he has been a great team mate. The Flames will provide him with an opportunity to get his career back on track, and who knows? Maybe he ends up getting a recall and actually contributes. Markstrom in Vancouver was considered a bust at the time Vancouver got him, and he has been fairly decent for them after getting his career back on track.
I, for one, just hope that Lack finds his game again in the AHL, and just wish him luck.

One of the major things I immediately noticed with Rittich was his poise in net. He looked confident in there, none of the hesitation or head shakes you would see with Lack.
I sympathise with a player who has lost confidence. I really do.
I sympathise more with Flames fans who have suffered through a decade of goalies who are soft in the head, and unable to handle a starting role.
It's what I love about Smith. He's a #1 and he knows it.
None of this "oh, lets get him a chance and some confidence and we think he can step in if he finds his game" blah blah blah.
There are 60 goalie jobs in the entire world. Give our 2 to guys who don't need a shrink to stop the puck.
