meh... not a terrible trade...
really dependent on whether you like Smith, but the actual parts of the deal seem fair

Deals like this remind me of the 2009 Flames Sutter era.
I'm going to miss seeing the Flames draft people in the second round (except the core is still much younger).

It was between Smith and signing Roloson, need that aging vet presence between the pipes.

I am fine with it though. Falkovsky, Kylington, Ollas-Mattason, Kulak. We are still deep on LD. I am not crazy about Mike Smith though. Was realy hoping for our "Talbot" in Raanta.

Don't want to say I called it but I did and was called paranoid in the Hickey thread, right when his college coach said he was coming back I knew he had no intention of playing for the Flames, he's majoring in general studies, why would he go back if he isn't getting a degree that's useful.

So essentially it's a second-round pick then.

What's clownish about your posts is you think the Flames could've gotten a big package for him but you don't even know what his potential is? Talking out of your ass was right

McCollum maybe and Rittich possibly...but the other guys need to play as much as they can, and that will be in Stockton.
Still may see another vet brought in to camp on a 2 way deal or even a PTO to challenge in my guess.

I dont think Chad even plays a game for them. Was just sent for expansion requirements. I could still see him resigning here.

There was something almost inevitable about acquiring Smith.
Proven starter.
Term left on contract is just right.
Treliving's history with the Coyotes.
Hate to give up the 2nd, but the cost wasn't outrageous for a starting goalie. Salvaging something for Hickey is shrewd. The Hickey situation demonstrates drafting college-bound players does carry a risk. Not a Russian/KHL level of risk, but still a risk.

Decent deal to me. Looking forward to seeing Smith between the pipes here. Not often you can acquire an Olympian

I don't get the support for this trade, 75% of Smith is still a bad goalie, for a prospect and a 2nd. Calgary sending anything for Smith is a horrible trade.

I wonder if Calgary talked to the Rangers about Raanta and what the asking price was. I think he would have been the best option . IMO, I feel if Raanta gets a starting role, he will be the next Talbot.

It's conditional in the same way the Russell trade was conditional. We're still losing a 3rd at worst. Most likely a 2nd.

Sign Elliott....that costs you a 3rd, sign Johnson and you're burning a season with inconsistent goaltending again.
Moving forward costs assets, so we were always going to have to spend assets, its just about how much.
This seems pretty marginal. If Smith works out well and we make the playoffs it costs us a 2nd rounder.

What would suck is if Gillies/Rittich/Parsons steal the starter's job partway through the season and that's the reason the Flames make the playoffs and have to give up a second rounder.

I just feel like treliving could have picked up a better solution to the goaltending situation in this market. Hitching your wagon to an aging Mike smith, and giving up a draft pick to do so is not so good.
