Humans are always the same. Recency bias from the last flood means we'll over prepare for awhile. Then people will get tired of a giant clay berm on memorial and preparations will get less and less, and the cottage owners at ghost lake will write letters that they shouldn't drain it so they can use their boats and transalta will complain they want to sell the power and things will all go back to pre-flood. THEN there'll be another huge flood.

Aligns with what Tony Robbins says,

Good times create weak people,
Weak people create hard times, (e.g. complacency making us to vulnerable to disaster)
Hard times create strong people,
Strong people create good times.

It's a cyclical part of human nature. Applies to other things like the pandemic and wars as well.

Yeah my buddy has an old ranch back there, and he said he's as wet as it's been in a decade. Alot drier when I saw him a few days ago.

I just biked the SD, on Sunday. Mud, yes. Wet, yes. Snowy, no. Gotta make some decent elevation to the get to the good stuff.

The Bow is gnarly in the mountains right now. On that note, Highwood to Lougheed opens today. Might go for another burner.

Spoiler!

You might want to double check before you head out to Highwood pass. Closed still with no open date.

I checked out the completed berm yesterday evening with the kiddos, a few TV crews down there and lots of neighbours coming by to check it out.

Yup, it's a berm alright.

Rode past the area closer to the Peace Bridge and they have a battery of pumpers setup to move water out of Sunnyside. No water currently being pumped.

Yup, those pumps at 7th street are there in case the city needed to close the stormwater outflows in that location. Which would then cause water backup in the community, and the idea would be that those pumps would take over and assist.

Great! First this city spends money on a useless bridge nobody uses and now we waste money on this berm thing. All this equipment should be in the suburban area building interchanges!

Rain forecasted for Sunday to Monday increasing now. And will be warmer so might not be adding to the snowpack this time

They should line up all of the Fire Department trucks and just open the hoses on Sunnyside and get this over with.

There's already a bluff right behind there - it's natures berm!

Given where it's located...was the memorial berm meant to turn Sunnyside into a swimming pool or keep water out. It eems downstream of where I would have expected it to be...and if anything would accumulate water in Sunnyside...

Yeah, but if we just hose down Sunnyside it'll be like the 60s all over again! Hosing down the Hippies!

The area between the berm and the Center Street is the lowest point of the existing barrier. What they're trying to prevent is the river overflowing its banks there and then flowing back into Sunnyside. I think this picture from 2013 really shows it well: you can see where the river is overflowing the banks in the east and then flooding into Sunnyside, while rest of the existing berm is still above the water level.

At about 2:30pm they announced that the Bow and Elbow were downgraded from a flood watch to a high flow warning. So yeah in the clear
