I'd swing for the fences. Give him some ice team, give him decent team mates and see if a change of environment makes a difference. If it doesn't move accordingly.

Quick someone post the clip of Homer yelling mystery box, or Peter saying the mystery box could even be a boat.

~37% chance that player plays 100+ NHL games
~11% chance that player is a top 6 F / top 4 D

It's just a 2nd round pick. It's the 4th round picks we need to have a death-grip on.

Lazar is a big reclamation project. Actually can't believe he got a 2nd rounder even in a weak draft.

Would rather have the magic beans.
As they should. It's a good deal for the Senators, but that does not mean that it is also not a good deal for the Flames. Trading is not always a zero-sum game.

Lazar also performed his best to date when Dave Cameron was coach of the Sens. This must have played a bit into it too.

Depends on what you thought the next 176 and beyond brought.

Given the Flames put Jokkipakka on waivers yesterday and he was included in this trade, I'm willing to bet it was the Flames who offered up the second round pick. I would guess this trade was set yesterday with the caveat that the Sens could back out if they got a 1st round pick or a 2nd plus a better player.

He never had much offensive potential - he's a faster Chiasson with less touch. Upside is bottom six winger. Good chance he's in Europe in two years.

Sure, most 2nds don't pan out, which is why you need lots of them - they're lottery tickets.

This.

The draft looks to be really weak, this isn't a draft where you might be able to sneak out some top tier talent out of. A 2nd in a rough draft is probably a third or fourth in a good draft year.

Lazar has his warts, but he's the right age for the team and has potential to turn things around with a change in scenery.

Hopefully he has a jump in his step coming into the next game.

I'm dumbstruck at the people on here who write off a guy who *just* turned 22. If your employers/spouses/parents/friends had written you off at that age....where would you be?

Some guys take developing - and end up in the wrong spot to mature for a while. When they get to a place where someone takes time and effort with them, they can bloom. His work in his earlier years looks pretty good, but he was with a relatively crappy Ottawa team, and lost momentum. Jokki was a freebie anyway (waivers) and the Flames got potential and another kid. What's not to like about him coming here?

Wow. Tough crowd.

Looking around the NHL it feels like the Flames should of got alot more out of a 2nd round pick.

I'm not overly thrilled either, but you are being overly dramatic.

For instance, 176 games played is over 100 more than any second round pick from Lazar's draft class. His 36 points is double the top second rounder from Lazar's draft class as well - though Patan managed his 18 in 1/3 the games.

In fact, only two second rounders from the 2012 draft, one year earlier than Lazar, has played as many games as he has.

As Textcritic says, if the flames are going to compete in the next 5 years they are going to do with with the talent already in the system. Well, if that's the case, the Flames are in huge f'ing trouble because they don't have anything in the system, all their bluechippers are contributing NHL'ers.

The Flames are goign to have to go out and buy a significant asset at some point and the philosophical direction should be accumulating a quantity of picks in order to make trades to acquire impact players without having the complication of sending significant salary the other way.

Lazar isn't some massive mistake, but I don't see much difference between acquiring him and acquiring Shinkaruk, except one was significantly more costly to acquire than the other in my opinion. You're banking on an improbable turnaround to justify the expense of the acquisition. What it does for the Flames is it removes flexibility in future acquisitions which have the potential to have a greater total impact on the franchise.

I don't hate the player, I just hate the fact the Flames are once again deficit spending with draft picks. You'd think they would have learned their lesson by now.
We've had an excess of picks the last few years. This particular draft is one of the worst in a long time. You're one of the only ones trying to manufacture this kind of outrage / concern.

We're now at the point where we need to speed up the process of players making an impact.

You are way, way over dramatizing here. Which is what you usually do with the enduring raincloud from which you live under.

He was the Ben Hutton/Brandon Davidson type sensation for the Leafs one year out of training camp and then reality set in. He's a smaller guy.
