We called it bumper-jumping. And in Winnipeg , it was bumper-shining, which I always thought was a stupid name.
You did it mostly in mall parking lots? In grade 9 and 10, it was my primary mode of transportation for getting to school.
When a bus went up the street from neighbourhood A (where I lived) to neighbourhood B, where the high school was, there were often 3 or 4 kids hanging off the back of said bus.

Being able to buy a pack of smokes for my mother when I was 8. A signed note was all the guy at the 7-11 (back when they were open from 7 to 11) needed to oblige.

I hear this a lot, but really, what does the guy at Sev care? Back then there werent really any serious fines or penalties for selling smokes to a kid so what does he care whether you give the smokes to your mom or smoke them yourself?
If he gets caught what does he have to lose? At the time, not a lot. Probably a 'slap on the wrist' type of fine. Now those fines are pretty substantial.
Same with underage drinking. I was drinking at a bar downtown when I was 16 and I got caught by a Cop, he asked to see my ID so I hand him my license which clearly told him I was only 16 and the punishment was that I had to finish my beer, pay my bill and leave...oh, and promise not to do it again.
Now? The bar would be heavily fined so they have to be stricter.

What seems so weird looking back on it is that my mom would write a new note every time - like 3 or 4 times a week. They should have had laminated cards for kids to buy smokes for their moms.

My Sister used to send me to 7-11 every day with a note, and 5 bucks to buy her a pack of smokes, and I could buy a comic.
I think I was 7 or 8, it wouldn't have taken much just to write the note myself, and after a while they probably didn't need the note.
But one day she gave me the 5 bucks and the note, I never read the note, and when they opened it at the store they started to laugh. My sister had written "Please sell this little girl a pack of .. . "
So with the 5 bucks I bought 10 comics and a slurpee and pocketed the change and when I got home my sister asked me where her smokes were and I basically told her to go F herself and get her own smokes from now on.
My dad grounded me for a week for stealing money from my sister but let me keep the comics.

As far as I knew, a signed note from an adult made it completely legal back then.

I never needed a note. Was running to the store to pick up smokes for the old man for as young as I can remember - probably about 7 or 8 as well.

I remember working Christmas morning shifts at a group home and putting a pack of smokes and a lighter into the stocking of the few kids that didn't have a family to go to and were stuck in the group home for the day, it wasn't strictly allowed but it was a grim effing day for those kids so the least I could do is make sure they wern't nicking out for it.
Also we had plausible deniability, 'hey that was santa, nothing to do with me!"

I remember when A&W had a cigarette dispensing machine right in the restaurant. Anyone could use it.

Five bucks? Wasn't a pack of cigarettes like $0.25 in the 50s?

ah, I'm picturing trailer parks and obese women here. Why didn't your sister go herself?

Now that you mention it, bumper shining sounds familiar, that would have been in Regina. Regina, Winnipeg, bumper shining connection?
I got to school in the back of my friends brothers pickup mostly, even in -30

We didn't live in a trailor park but there were two huge ones across the street in Bonivista.
When you're the youngest kid and only boy in a family with three older sisters, you do errand running. People think that the Refs are against the Flames, when your the only boy in a house full of girls you lose every dispute and you run every errand and you do every chore.

That at 10 you could be trusted with some second rate rudimentary wood-working tools without being liable for burning the house down?
Its a compliment to you and a statement about the wussification of our society that kids cant handle cool stuff anymore.
