Kulak's had a sound defensive game since his second year of turning pro. His feet and stick work are the keys to his defense, not physicality. It's sort of funny how once Brodie began making his jumping spin-off from checks a thing, you can see Kulak doing the same thing from time to time.

I think that open D spot (at the moment) is between Kulak and Spoon.

Some notes of my own.

Vey - looked better than last game, but he's nothing more than an AHL call-up.
Freddie - Deserves his 1-way contract and looks determined to make the most of it.
Kulak - Looks more and more like Brodie everytime I see him play.
Poirier - Hugely disappointed as I have been for quite some time. Makes stupid mistakes and turns the puck over in all 3 zones. Higher on Klimchuk at this point.
Jankowski - He's NHL caliber now, but there's some more untapped offense he can develop in the AHL.
Bouma - Looked better than last year, hopefully he can start earning that contract.
Ferland - I'm not counting him out as our 1RWer this season. Good intensity all game and was able to keep up with his hands in order to make some really good plays. His control with the puck gives me hope that he's ready to step up.

I think Jankowski could be a good NHLer by Christmas if they stick him in the AHL for seasoning.

Good point, especially since injuries in the NHL are an inevitability. An opening will occur, making room for patience. Unless, of course, he proves that The Flames simply cannot leave him out game one.

My thoughts on some of the players from last night.

Kulak looks good but he can be pretty easy to push off the puck at times. A bit soft on his skates.
Vey I thought looked pretty good, but looking pretty good in a game of fringe NHLers means you are probably a fringe NHLer.
Ferland is the same Ferland. A few great shifts and long stretches of complete invisibility.
Grossmann is everything that is bad about Engelland.
Jankowski was steady. Can tell he has good vision, but is not assertive, which is a bit disappointing as he's one of the older players on the ice. My prediction is he'll be a solid but unspectacular pro. Kind of a Rob Niedermayer.

Johnson was obviously spectacular.
Rittich showed good instincts and good tracking the puck but there were a couple of times his rawness showed through. Needs a lot of seasoning but I like the signing for depth thus far.
