I'm really happy about this signing, even happier that he didn't burn a year off his ELC.

Since I can't get a crumble of info from this new silent regime I hope Jankowski is the next best thing in flames colors just so Feaster can give Burke/Treliving the twitter finger.

I'm pretty sure he's already done this in regards to Gaudreau and Monahan. Usually all caps, of course.

Gaudreau was all Button/Cummins, I doubt Jay even remembered his name until draft day.

Monahan was a no brainer at 6 but the group did have him 3rd behind Mackinnon/Jones. Feaster really wanted Mackinnon.(duh) In hindsight Monahan might have been the best of the bunch.

In the 2012 draft, Weisbrod asked Feaster months before the draft to take Jankowski unless they somehow picked in the top 10. He truly felt Jankowski would be a great player if given time, Jay sent Cummins to have another look, he came away very impressed and the rest is history.

Cummins was a big influence in that draft for the group, Besides Jankowski, Sieloff, Gillies and DeBlouw were basically all on him.

http://www.calgarysun.com/2016/03/31...signs-contract

Quote:
As the clock ticked down on his final year at Providence College, one would think at some point the 21-year-old had to have secretly perused some of the options around the NHL, seeing where he might be a fit.

After all, despite nurturing him for four years, the Calgary Flames only held his rights until Aug. 15, at which point he was free to shop around and choose his destination.

Tempting?

“Well … actually a few months ago, my advisor and I sat down and had a talk, and it was then we figured out there’s no reason to look outside Calgary,” Jankowski said at the tail end of a whirlwind day in which he signed his first pro contract with the Flames, flew to San Francisco and made his way to watch his new AHL club in Stockton.

“He asked if there was any reason to not be there, and I said, ‘no, I’m very happy here.’ Honestly, there was no looking around.”
Quote:
While Treliving deserves plenty of kudos for building a relationship with a kid he never drafted, he credits the work of development staffers like Troy Crowder, Ron Sutter and Ray Edwards for not only fostering the relationship but pushing the youngster constantly.

Even when the Flames rejected Jankowski’s plea to turn pro last year after winning a national title, it didn’t damage the bond between the two sides as it was explained another year in college would be in his best interest.

“Looking back, I think it was best,” said Jankowski, who led the team in scoring with 40 points in 38 games, marking his fourth-straight point increase.

“Playing first-line centre with a great group and with a target on our backs as defending champions was a great experience. Ever since I was drafted in 2012, the organization has been nothing but great. I wanted to be here and be a Flame. Now, I’m definitely ready to make the next step.”

Also from the Francis article, Jankowski is looking to come to camp 5-10 lbs heavier than his current weight of 200 lbs.

Honestly I'm pretty pumped that Janko signed just because we have exerted so much energy following his progress and debating him. It would feel like such a waste if he was gone now.

Can we all agree, Brad Treliving is really really good at his job? Getting Janko to sign without burning a year, king's ransom for a pending UFA #4/5D, a 2nd + for a rapidly declining Jiri Hudler, signed Jon Gillies, didn't draft Nick Ritchie over Bennett, got a 2nd and a 3rd for a 32 year old UFA winger who was out of hockey by November, Sven for a 2nd, stole Dougie Hamilton, got Gio for 6 years at under $7M when the ask was allegedly 9+, Granlund for Shinkaruk, the Brodie contract etc

If he hadn't re-signed Ramo, we might not win 20 games this year. After the regular season ends, he will be responsible for one bad contract on the team - Raymond.

The man knows what he's doing.

Could someone please post the video of Janko cutting off that breakway chance from centre ice at development camp? Don't for the life of me know what it would be searched for under beyond that.

I mean, yes, clearly he's a good negotiator. He gets great value for his trades and contracts. However, I won't be satisfied until he transforms the roster into a perennial playoff team. I'm fairly confident he will get the team there, but it's hard to be overly enthusiastic with the current state of the team.

Rome wasn't built in a day. To this point, his losses are Hiller *this year only*, Setoguchi *who cares, one year 750k nothing deal* and... that's it. It's not like we're going to start holding waiving Byron against him.

But yes, overall Treliving has been a wizard.

I guess that depends on how one views "the current state of the team"

In my eyes, this is a team where it's best players (for the most part) are it's youngest, and only likely to get better. Meanwhile, those young players are being dragged down by older, expensive, under performing veterans combined with the worst goaltending I've seen in a long damn time.

Luckily, most of those veterans contracts expire after one more season, so if BT can fix the goaltending and then replace those veterans with better value players we will be laughing, because the young core that's in place is for real, and also balanced well between forwards and D. (unlike the tire fire up north)

But he somehow has gotten the Flames to the point where they have minimal cap room available (a sign in my opinion that the re-build is close to complete) and the on-ice results are not yet there.

These are the pains of a rebuild. 3-4 years ago we all knew this was coming. And now here we are. Suffering through the ups and downs of it.

But it would be hard to have faith in anyone else other then Treliving. I try to picture other GMs in his position and what kind of shape we'd be in with one of them. Imagine having George McPhee who was available at the time. Or Ray Shero. Or if Feaster was kept on board and in charge right now. *Shudder*

While the Flames are rebuilding on the ice, they were certainly also rebuilding the front office. BT is a man on a mission, and a man with a vision. Yes the team is painful to watch this season. But I don't think you'll find very many Flames' fans who don't see a light at the end of the tunnel.
