He was sure ranked high early in his draft year - November rankings had him at 7 overall ahead of Ristolainen, Lazar, Pulock, Domi and Nichuskin.
Mid Term rankings of North American players had him at 5 - ahead of Nurse, Mantha, Horvat, Rychel, Compher and Hartman.
He fell steadily throughout his draft year, a few articles I googled had him 12 to 15 in June pre-draft. Went at 24 in deep draft, wonder why the drop over the course of the year besides the attitude questions.
I am happy, think more upside than Granlund, seems to be scoring well in the AHL. I think he is the more skilled player, does he pan out who knows, worth the gamble.

I hope he does have attitude issues. And I hope it brings an edge to the room. Too many "good guys" has made this team softer than a Taylor Swift retaliation.

Hunter Shinkaruk, Calgary Flame: "Right now I’m just so excited. I’ll have a smile on my face, ear-to-ear, all day. It’s been great.”
Shinkaruk (cont): "That chance to put on that jersey, that jersey that I watched and looked up to is pretty cool." #Flames
First person Shinkaruk called after learning of the trade? His mom: "She was crying she was so excited." #Flames

I wonder what Shinkaruk would be worth right now in terms of draft picks. Did the Flames get as much or more for Markus Granlund than we did for Baertschi?

I love this deal! Shinkaruk gives us added depth on the wing, something we needed.

Plus the Flames get a player who's waiver eligible for longer.
I'm not blown away by Shinkaruk by any stretch, but this is a dice role trade, gambling from a position of strength to address a real weakness on this team.

Also Grandlund doesn't really fit the "bigger meaner" team that BT and Burke seem to embrace. I am not sure Hunter fits the bill either but Grandlund doesn't really fit the mold of they type of team the Flames want. This gives the Flames other options. I wonder if Derek might be the next call up.

I would imagine he's worth more than Granlund. Not sure if this move is part of a bigger trade or the team has him in their plans. He seemed to finally be adapting to the pro game.

Granlund could only play the centre ice position, something we depth in.

Nope. He's out long term with a broken jaw.
Assuming you mean Derek Grant.

Often a fan's take on a player's "character" is very underinformed.
They hear someone say that one time he did this.... They knew someone who asked for an autograph and he refused once. One time he gave up in a game when he was 15 years old. I saw an expression on the guys face when he sat on the bench and that clearly means he has terrible character.
Fans do not have enough information to judge a player's character. You need to be around someone a lot to make that judgement. You can't make it from the couch or the stands.
Even if a guy legitimately did something that wasn't great once, that doesn't mean he has a terrible character. How many of us would like to be defined by the worst thing we ever did?
I think this is a good trade. Grandlund has shown us what he is and doesn't seem to be progressing much. I think he tops out as a 30 point player who is about 50% at faceoffs.
I can't believe he was enough to get Shinkarek.

What are the chances we see Shinkaruk called up to the NHL right away? He was the leading scorer on his AHL team so you'd have to think he's close to ready now.
Though Agostino and Hamilton are both deserving of a call-up as well.
