TFA was a bit underwhelming because of its lack of originality. Some cool characters and lines, even visuals, but that doesn't make up for plot. It was a little TOO simple and too rehash-y for my taste, despite a lot of good elements being there.
Oddly I think the standalone films could have the potential to be better than the films in the third trilogy, given that the storylines they will cover revolve around the timeline of the original trilogy which is most beloved by fans, and being standalone they will have a more defined beginning, middle and end, as they are not a continuation of a larger story arc, which tends to bring more satisfaction and payoff.
But who knows, maybe ep.9 can somehow show up Jedi in that regard. But it would be hard to do.
There are a lot of background characters that you wish would have a movie. Porkins a formal Imperial crack Tie Fighter pilot who upset with the Empires murdering of billions starts eating his feelings. He fails out of the Imperial Navy cause he's fat and can't wedge himself into a tie fighter anymore so he joins the Rebellion cause he can fly in the roomier X-Wing.
Personally I want a movie based on the life of the storm trooper who bangs his head on the door on the Death Star.
ST-114 was a brave imperial soldier posted to the outer rim. During a patrol he walks off a cliff due to a lack of peripheral injury in the Storm Trooper Helmet and fights his way back to active duty though he's still dealing with a devastating brain injury that makes him clumsy. his unit mates give him the nickname "Falldown"
He finally gets returned to full duty after years of fighting against the Imperial Bureaucracy and the doubts of his Commanding Officer Colonel Klink. He's assigned to the Death Star and the last words he hears over his helmet radio are "All right kid lets blow this thing and go home"

How about a standalone story for Dak Luke's tailgunner on Hoth. I still love the family guy storyline of him taking on the Empire. "Hey empire get ready to suck some Dak"

Hey guys - I heard rumours that tickets were going on sale today (Oct 23) but I think that was false. Does anyone know when the pre-sale for tickets is?

TFA really had to establish that the post-Lucas era was not going to continue to screw things up by going way off course. I think they've done that and built up the necessary good will. Now they can explore the storylines a bit better.
What you mean that the next movie isn't going to start several months after the events of last and show Luke and Rey on a ice planet named Moroth riding Taun T . . . . err Naut bauns?

Did we ever figure out when tickets are going on sale for this movie?
