It's also extremely rare to acquire top tier goalies, so you're often left with relatively unproven back-ups as your next option and often those don't work out either. See Scrivens, Bernier, Fasth, Talbot (maybe it's more an Edmonton thing haha)

Bernier is an interesting case. He was considered the "future" prospect for the Kings while Quick was the "stopgap".
Now Quick is their franchise goalie and they effectively flipped Bernier into Marian Gaborik.
That could very well be Joni Ortio and Jon Gillies of the future for all we know. You could find your #1 anywhere, it might never come from our system. We might sign Talbot this offseason and get ourselves a Vezina candidate. I think he's really good, despite the Oilers effect on his stats.
