Yup. Although, they are without Dzagoev, their most creative (and best) player.

But yeah, between now and 2018, they need to do a complete overhaul if they intend to do something at the WC.

That always happens to England. They have a self destruct button on them. Nothing changes with these guys.

Really doesn't get much more England than that. A mostly dominant performance and still find a way to not win.

Although on the tying goal after the initial clearance they did well to recontrol the ball sweep it left and cross it into the box. Many teams would have panicked and shot into Row Z

The thing that won't get talked about that should was Hodgson getting Wilshere ready to sub on instead of Vardy when the game was still 0-0. If Dier hadn't scored, he would have looked like an even bigger idiot.

Even a blind chicken finds a kernel of corn every now and then.

Their inability to pass the ball, and to constantly try to get the ball to their striker via long balls even after he kept losing every duel with the English defenders, was frustrating.

Since they're not playing qualifications for the WC, now it's an ideal time to switch generations. The team we saw tonight desperately needs a couple of new players with speed and techical ability.

Rooney was fine as a CM too

only two I look to replace would be Sterling definitely, and maybe Lallana

balls just died at Sterlings feet he has to go, Lallana I wouldn't mind playing again but I just don't get what he offers besides being another version of James Milner

that being said I would switch the formation too though, not sure why we arent playing two strikers when it's our biggest strength, and if Rooney is a fine CM too it works even better

Kane/Vardy
Alli
Rooney/????
Dier

works against Wales too because Dier keeps watch of Bale and we still have 3 CMs to control the ball, with Walker/Rose giving width

isnt that the plan though

I know team would be built around Dzagoev if he was fit, and Slutsky was just brought in to stabilise what Fabio broke to make it to France

I just got an opportunity watch bits of this:

England being England, snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

And it kind of was a defeat, Russia was more or less free points, they are by far the worst team in this group so now England needs points against Wales and Slovakia, two teams that are not going to roll over and die for them.

I'd say that despite the earlier pessimism Rooney in midfield worked pretty well.

The best part for me was right after Dier's goal the whole team goes to celebrate on the sidelines and the poor camera guy gets caught in the action and they knocked him over! I hope one of them gave the dude their jersey afterwards.

On the Russian goal I agree with DeVos, thats on Rose, hes the fullback, defending that post is his job and he had no awareness of Berezutsky and he didnt attack the ball at all. He had every intention of letting that ball fly over his head with absolutely no knowledge of who was around him.

Full marks to the Russians though, they played a crap game, barely challenged England at all and yet walk away with a point. I doubt they'll get another.

Finally though, look at the body language of the players at the end of that game, Cahill, Dier and Kane look like England just got eliminated from the tournament.

Its a rough result but it isnt the end of the world, I'm sure most people had that match chalked up as 3 points for England and easing the pressure on them making it through the group.

But goals? Where are the goals? Rooney is a notorious no-show when it counts, but come on, there are tons of goals in this team but where are they? Needing a free kick against arguably the worst team in the tournament?

The pundits were raking Roy over the coals prior to this game because he lined up a serious attacking team. Where was it?

Well...I hate to resort to FIFA rankings but:

24. Slovakia
26. Wales
29. Russia

And this Russia is without some of their best players.

russia was 2nd favorite in better odds

would take those over fifa rankings as a general consensus

they are still favorites essentially in their last 2 games too

Russia +105
draw +240
wales +230

Russia +115
draw +225
slovakia +275
