I'm in the group that never did buy the updated jersey once the Alberta flag was added. I hated the blue when it came out and still can't bring myself to spend money on one. I'm not even as annoyed by it as I used to be, but every time I think about getting a new one I realize I'd rather just wear a red shirt. I'm not aggressively weird about it, it's just a preference thing.

The ads will fall into the same category. It's a business and it's inevitable, and neither of those things particularly anger me. That being said, I'd just rather go without.

If you want to make some stand against ads, go ahead. Most won't, even the ones that say they will.
Now we're getting somewhere. I say put money on it because it's the easiest way to get the point across.

Take a stand? No, because as a free enterprise the NHL has the right to do whatever they want with the jerseys. Same how I have the right to never wear one with ads.

As others have mentioned, the reebok/nike ad is tolerable because they're actually making the article of clothing. And its microscopic. I don't mind those "ads" the same way I dont mind the Honda H logo on the front of my Accord. You're right when you say what will probably happen is not a full-on soccer effect, but the discussion is in regards to ads on replica jerseys in any form which is where I and others have stated we won't buy anything that has an ad on it.

Yeah but even in your first paragraph you still said plastered with ads. They won't be plastered with ads. The replica jerseys with ads is a valid discussion but theoretical as in reality it's probably a moot point.

The solution seems to be simple: throw ads all over the jerseys if you want but keep them off the retail versions.

Everybody wins.

I actually don't mind ads on my jerseys. I'm a soccer fan with several jerseys from different teams and they have huge ads bigger than the team logo itself. But soccer fans are used to that. It's the norm. Here's the issue I see with jersey ads in hockey... Even if you have fans that have accepted that ads will be on the jersey and are still willing to buy the jersey, do you risk losing sales because the brand on the jersey isn't "cool?"

For example... Say Red Bull puts their logo on the Flames jerseys. I wouldn't mind that. A little Red Bull patch on the shoulder or something. Red Bull is associated with extreme sports and they're largely considered to be a "cool" brand. I'll buy that jersey if I like the design. Now, replace that Red Bull logo with Scotiabank (for example) and I'm probably much less likely to buy a jersey and become a walking ad for a bank. Is it a dumb place to draw a line in the sand? Yeah. Probably. And I'm sure the sponsorship money more than makes up for the lost sales from a few fans who won't buy a jersey because of the sponsor logo so I doubt the NHL or the teams care. It's just what has been going through my mind lately.

Also, I wonder if any teams will go the Barcelona FC route and actually pay a charity to use their logo on their shirts?

The people that say they will never buy a Jersey with ads on them, do you mean you won't buy a Jersey if there is an ad on the on ice ones but not the replicas, or you won't buy a Jersey whether they are on the replicas or not?

I don't think soccer jerseys are a fair comparison though. The logos on soccer jerseys were never the main feature and there was a lot of blank real estate.

The logos on hockey jerseys are large, front and centre. So who knows how it will look.

It isn't. Lots of posters have mentioned the NBA and CFL routes here.

Adam silver on the NBA's plans:
http://www.nba.com/video/channels/nb...er-jersey.nba/

Teams will be given the option to sell the space or not.

The charity option is interesting because that has been done in the NHL before and I don't think anybody mined. Though those were charities set up by the teams (Vancouver, Winnipeg & Phoenix in the 90's, there might be more).

I can't wait for ads. I actually have held off buying a jersey because they don't have ads on them. I can't wait for the most ads, I will buy 23, one for each roster player.

With most European soccer clubs you can by with or without sponsor and that drastically changes the look without. CFL as mentioned, you can't buy with the sponsor. I expect the same with all pro sports teams eventually, but if the sponsorship stays as a patch or patches, I doubt it will be an option to buy at a retail level for a long time.

As an aside, I figured early on in life when the early 80s sticker books came out, where the Flames ranked. Back of the sticker book, only got a single page, and unlike every other team with game shots, the Flames were an afterthought and Opeechee had to scramble a guy to a Flames practice for the pictures...in sponsored practice jerseys.

Not sure if this is the right place, but the NBA sign-ed it's first jersey ad deal. 76'ers signed a three yr contract with stubhub.

Maybe a sign of things to come? I guess the NBA isn't allowing beer and gambling ads, and will sell jerseys san ads at first. Although the NHL couldn't get people to buy ads for the World Cup, so maybe the NHL will be spared a little longer.

Haha.
Stupid World Cup. Maybe if it was done properly someone would want to sponsor a Team USA or Canada that's missing all of their young talent.

If ads are unavoidable, this is a good step. The Stubhub logo is coloured to match the 76ers, so it's not as much of a site thumb as it could be

Seems exceptionally intrusive, and might affect the fans enjoyment of the sport.

Spoiler!
