It really does depend on what Gio's extension cap hit is, and I suppose Hudler.
We've got Brodie/Backlund on very good deals right now, IMO. Hopefully Monahan and Gaudreau join the mix with reasonable deals.
We do know David Jones and his 4M hit'll be gone.
Smid, Engelland, Raymond, and Bollig are the four bad contracts that would conflict with Semin's.
I wish Smid would retire. Just a big cap hit and not really all that useful of a player at this point.
I... Don't really care as long as it's not Monahan/Gaudreau/Brodie/Bennett. They can have Poirier if they want. Provorov, Barzal, Hanifin.. And Semin himself ain't bad either. We'd be talking contender.
Yeah, 6 goals and 13 assists ain't bad for a goal scorer.

The Hurricanes were one of the most confusing teams ever.
Jordan Staal, who used to be a 25 goal scorer, only had 6 goals last year.
Eric Staal, who used to be a 40+ goal guy and a guy in that Toews conversation as an elite leader, hasn't broken 25 goals in four years.
Even Sekera looked much stronger playing the Kings, a team that couldn't score this year, tyan on the Hurricanes.
Skinner, who had 33 goals last year, only got 18 this year while playing MORE games.
Something about Carolina makes goalscoring die. It's wierd because they're actually a strong enough possession team that if they were in the playoffs, they'd be one of the dark horse favorites for the Cup. If I didn't knoe any better I would think Brent Sutter was coaching the 'Canes.
I honestly think a return to a high-flying team like Calgary would bring Semin back to being a 25+ goal scorer, and he's an upgrade defensively over Hudler too, improving at least one of our top 2 lines. Either way, #5 overall would be the centrepiece of the deal.

How is Semin an upgrade on Hudler defensively? Neither guy is a defensive player, and Hudler has been a pretty good player at generating even strength offensive production in 3 of the last 4 seasons.

But Semin has truculence.

If you have to take a risk on Alex Semin to get Ivan Provorov, you freaking do it. All day long and twice on Sundays.
Semin could be reborn as a goal scorer in Hartleys system. That is of course if he can actually get past the fact Hartley wont play you if you cannot skate hard back the other way once in a while too.
Provorov would be the Flames' version of Sergei Zubov. You make whatever trade you have to and don't look back.
think it is pipe dream that the Flames could get #5.

Only way he becomes a 25+goal player on the flames is a complete philosophy change and buy in on his part.

I think you only make this trade when Carolina is on the clock and you know your player is still available

Well someone damn good is going to be there at 5. Whether it is Marner, Strome, Hanifin or Provokov.
From a fan point of view it is a no brainer because it isn't our money.
But even if the Flames owners are willing to swallow that amount, I can't see the Canes moving the fifth overall pick in this draft to rid themselves of a contract. Their fans would revolt.

He was always a pretty strong defensive player other than taking bad penalties. And if you look at him, for the last four seasons his penalties are significantly lower than earlier in his career.
Of course, he has this mythical rep that he doesn't backcheck, but I'd take Semin's defense many times over guys who actually don't backcheck, like Kessel or Yakupov.
Hudler's a bit of a liability in the defensive zone IMO. Semin's never been a liability in that same sense, but because he half-asses it so much you never seem to get what he's "truly" capable of. And I wouldn't expect to get it here, either, but even the Semin of two years ago would be fine. It's just two years here. Again, like I said, #5OA is why you do it.
The nice thing about Semin, is that, especially on a line with Backlund and Bennett, is that he wouldn't actually have to defend as often, because he's such a strong possession guy. But even though, you look back historically at the guy's career, statistically he's been a measurably stronger defender than other guys on his own line. Can he establish the discipline needed to play for Hartley? I don't know.

They have fans? Their attendance was worse than Arizona's.

You might be able to get Provorov at 7. Most experts think that Carolina will take Marner and New Jersey will target a forward. You never know though
While I do think the canes want to get rid of semin... I just can't see them parting with the 5th overall pick to do it unless it meant dropping only 2-4 spots. Dropping all the way to 15th overall would be a huge risk.
Provorov is a dream. Unless we were to take on Ward + Semin I doubt Carolina( the team that I think would be most likely to give up their pick) then I really don't think there's any chance of getting into the top 10, and even then I'm not sure they do it. Any other draft and Provorov is top 3 IMO
