I was rattled, incensed and devastated. But if that kid really wanted out, the Canucks are the perfect place for him and I will applaud Treliving for returning a 2nd.
Assuming Kerr is right. If he's not, I will resume my state of

Wow, clearly a lot of you valued Baertschi more than I did.
I'm happy with the trade. Another second rounder in a deep draft year, yes please! (or even better, trading a few of them for a better first rounder).

Am I the only one who thinks it's funny that some posters aren't willing to write Baertschi off after ~4 seasons of development, but are already writing Hunter Smith off after ~1?

As long as this is a 2015 pick I'm ok with this. If he hadn't had those three goals as an emergency call-up from juniors this would be easier to swallow for sure. Hasn't done. This was his year to turn things around and he's still struggling in the AHL.
Hope Treliving turns those three 2nds and two 3rds into a couple 1sts.

Too many people upset because of Sven's potential.
As a Canucks fan, there's the thought that this second could become a Bergeron or a Lucic or a Weber.
It was a potential for potential deal, the difference is the 2nd has more time to become something big. Sven has 9 months or this is a bust for the Canucks.
It's a fair deal from both sides.

Take the emotion out of this trade and it looks pretty good.
A 2015 2nd round pick for an AHL player....that looks pretty good to me.

I know it doesn't happen often, but I'd like to see some examples or the Flames trading within our division and it biting us in the ass. Sven certainly hasn't shown the ability to bite any other team in the ass when given the chance.
As others have said, the writing was on the wall with his waiver status next season and our depth on the wing. He'd have to be a lock to make the team next season for him to be beneficial to us. Do any of us see him as a lock for next season? I certainly don't. Should he be gifted that spot? I don't think so.

Because by trading an asset that doesn't fit in for whatever reason, you are also giving a rival that needs help with young prospects, a chance at filling their cupboards. If the Canucks and Flames are battling for a playoff spots in the upcoming seasons and Sven becomes the type of player he was drafted to be, he could very well be biting us in the ass.

A second round pick for a silky soft, former first round bust with an attitude problem? That's a pretty good return.
Better that losing him on waivers next season for nothing.

According to this article on Calgary Herald, Flames receive 2nd and 3rd round picks in the 2015 draft.

EDIT: Fixed now and reporting to be only a 2nd in 2015

I'm baffled at those who are concerned about which year the pick is. What does anyone know about 16 year olds who might be available from 31-60 two years from now?

If it was Sven that wanted the trade first then all my uneasy feelings are out the window. I like the trade, he wasn't going to Crack this roster.

Don't draft players that have been passed over in two drafts.

You mean like Tanner Pearson?
Look at Sven's stats:
this year : 8 goals, 25 points in 36
last year : 13 goals, 29 points in 41
his NHL stats, obviously suck
If this was any other name, and you found out said former-1st rounder from 4 years ago went for a 2nd round pick in a deep draft? That seems pretty standard.
I understand the outrage, I'm kind of pissed at how the whole situation was handled (not just Treliving or Burke, but Feaster as well) but at this point, looking at the trade itself, its good value. The handling of this prospect in particular was a mishandled and we lost a huge asset, but we didn't lose it in the trade, we lost it in the development. He might have success in Vancouver, but he probably wouldn't have had it here.

If you forget he was a top 20 draft pick and you just look at the player and his play, he is doing nothing to prove that he can make the NHL as a top 6 player. Add in his attitude and a meddling father, and things do not look good for him every making it. Let the Canucks take the risk, right now SB is a very long shot to be an NHL player. There are mid and late round picks in the Flames org who are better and improving and deserve the playing time in the AHL.
A year from now you would be waiving Sven or trading him for a bad of pucks. So, although he was a first, he's a failed draft pick, and getting a 2nd for him is excellent value.

Waiting until the 11th hour of the 2015 National Hockey League’s trade deadline, the Calgary Flames have appeared to strike a deal with the Vancouver Canucks that sees the 13th overall pick of the 2011 NHL draft head West. In exchange, according to Sportsnet analyst Elliotte Friedman, Calgary receives a second and third-round pick in 2015

how about his production in the ahl(an inferior league than the NHL) in a top 6 capacity
his body of work is definitely not fine. Sven being worth a 2nd says more about sven then treliving

And when he doesn't, the Flames win.

would you feel better if Vancouver (or Edmonton) claimed him off waivers instead?
