I couldn't disagree more. I watched one of the NHL classic games between the Isles and Caps from 87 a couple nights ago and it was like a rugby match.
Hooks, holds and interference were everywhere in the 80's.

Probably. I think the defense was not as strong as most teams today, and the game was more freewheeling, despite allowing more holding and hooking. I think the reduced size of the goalie equipment was a major contributor to the higher number of goals per game.

If you are talking about that record OT game featuring Kelly Hrudey? Well yeah officials totally put the whistles away in OT way more than they do now. I remember watching that game at my Grandmothers.
