I can see why it got some poor reviews. Bought it last night and played for a bit. It certainly doesn't feel like an open world at all. You barely see any players in game even before you do your instanced area. I saw 2 people on each map, which seemed really low from what everyone else seems to be describing. Not much in terms of team work either. I think I saw 1 person at a public event and that's it.
Environments felt very recycled, I think I went in the same building a few times.
I'll give it more of a chance, but wow, I really don't have a good first impression.

Man a lot of the hard mode missions aren't even worth it. There was one me and my buddy were trying where at the end you have to fight three witches at the same time, then a couple of big waves of tough guys, then a big boss, all without a checkpoint. On hard mode we would get to the second wave of guys before we were toast -- we were probably working at it for 45 minutes, trying again and again. Eventually we just threw it on to normal mode and blew through it first try in less than 10 minutes.
Like my friend said, for 400 extra XP it just isn't worth it. We could've played through it three times on normal if we wanted the extra XP for that much time.

Once you get to Venus, the environments, and areas start to feel a little different, but for the most part, it's true that there doesn't seem to be much diversity in the areas YET (hopefully).
It's not as open world as I would like either. It's actually pretty closed off, which is annoying.
Despite some of the downsides (repetitive environments and areas, repetitive mission types) I still think it's a blast.

You need to be at least lvl 26 to do a Raid. Even then I've heard it's extremely tough.

My feelings exactly...
It's a bit repetitive but I still seem to be enjoying grinding through stuff and bumping into CP'ers

Oh, what is it that is unlocked at level 16 then? I could have sworn it was raids, but I've been wrong before.
Edit: Google works, who knew. It was the strike playlist that unlocked.

I have passed some raids the first time through and IMO the most important part of a successful raid is to always keep tabs of your partners and if they are both waiting to respawn in a different area of the map to stay out of harms way until they respawn. Nothing worse than when you have one of the bullet sponges low on health and two players are down and the one guy left decides he's going to keep going toe to toe with the enemies and you end up having to start the entire thing over again.

I think you're talking about the strikes, apparently the raids are harder than that.

Was hoping to be able to raid, but stuck at lvl 24. I've had 3 legendary engrams turn into hunter legendary boots (Im a titan) a epic gun and a strange coin.

So how many people here are going to try a raid ever?

If I ever get to that level ( which I hope I will), I would definitely be down for a raid.
Just need to find the time to get from level 16 to 26...

At least your Legendary engrams turn into Legendary somethings, even if it's not for your current class. The 4 purple engrams I've found have all turned into crappy blue items that weren't even as good as what I already had equipped.

Lol. Someone should remind Bungie people are supposed to still have fun with end game content.

Got a group of friends who are all hovering around the 24-25 area. I'd imagine after the end of this week we could (miserably) attempt it.

I definitely want to try the raid. I'm way more into the PvE portion of the game than the PvP. So far only been doing occasional Crucible stuff to try and get the Ascendant things to upgrade my armor.

Finally hit level 21.
What's the best way to get higher? Strike playlists?

Yeah, Strike playlists will net you armor with more Light on it. Also, as you upgrade that armor the Light level will increase. I think you get the Light increase with each Defense upgrade on a piece.
