Agreed, when were running 40 mans, I was one of the officers and mage class leader, taking 8 mages and managing their loot whore desires, all the infighting, all the drama over damage etc...
I can't get over how much stress it was, fun sure, but I would estimate in any 40 man raid, about 15 people were top notch, 10-15 were just decent enough to help, 10 people would have been probably better not being there as they caused more trouble than anything, useless players who couldn't move out of fire, just stood there with a bomb on them, etc..
To describe leading a guild and raids as a thankless job isn't doing how awful it is justice. I have no issues with people who use Guild leading on a resume, just because of how AMAZING of a people person you have to be.
I hated it. I am too gruff and don't interact with people who #### up regularly too well. I was used as the disciplinary head of a three headed guild leading monster. I was absolutely hated by a majority of people because of it since if I was sending you a pm, chances are you were being told to shut up in raid or losing gkarma for being a dickhead.
You're forced to massage egos and keep people happy whether they deserve it or not. I still remember a female mage named Newsense that we ended up having to gkick because of all the issues she caused. Trying to use her gender as a reason she should get gear and then flipping #### when it went to someone else because they won the roll after bidding. Blaming leaders for being sexist or pming people who did win the gear to pass it to her and then accusing them of it. Gah. I get irritated talking about it again nearly four years later.
#### MC.
#### leading a guild.
Why am I even playing this game again?!

The only thing I ever did was class lead. There was definitely some satisfaction in being able to help groom a mediocre player into a good player. But then there were the flip sides of disappointment.
Didn't help that I had to do it in original Naxx which had Gothik and Horsemen which were so reliant on warriors. Since we could never get bindings, we ended up recruiting a Thunderfury warrior. And, as a player, trying to mold that one into a good warrior was like trying to knead a stone like it was dough.
After you kill a boss if you have a bonus roll token (http://www.wowhead.com/currency=994/...-tempered-fate) a window will pop up that is specific to your character. You can choose to use a token for an extra chance at loot from that boss, or pass.

I find this interesting, because I was tempted to use "Raid Leader" on my resume. I led my Alliance (of 4 seperate guilds) to victory over Ony, Rag, Nef and C'Thun (pre-patch) before burning out and saying "nevermore". I didn't use it as I felt that it would be too "geeky" and work against me, instead of for.
Wow... I've never really raided in WOW, I think I did a bit of content in WOTLK but can't remember. I've always just played it for the PvP.. and after the stories I have seen here I am glad lol. Sounds more like work than fun!

It's a lot of fun. It's also a lot of work. But you legitimately develop bonds with people through struggle and the reward of accomplishment is incredible. Going through frustration with a group of people and overcoming a boss is pretty rewarding.
I still play with some of the people 10 years later. Off and on of course.

I've always held that being a leader in these games require far more managerial talent than in real life. You have nothing on these players - you're not paying them, you're not a job reference or anything like that. People can quit on a dime and join any other company (guild) at the drop of a hat with no consequences.
It's your vision, skills and leadership that keeps everyone in line and wanting to log on for the next raid.
Led raids for a while, it sucked. Was a player for a while under both good leadership and bad leadership, and the difference is just night and day.

I was a main tank for MC, BWL, etc. during the vanilla era. Ended up with class lead duties as well and did a bunch of grooming and teaching.
One of the warriors was a Canadian as well and raided with him a lot, no drama or problems from him at all. His wife and son also played in game. Time passes and guilds change and people drift apart. I played here and there over the various expansions.
A bunch of years back (and obviously since those original vanilla days) I hear through social media that he and his wife got into a huge domestic dispute, he struck her, the son stepped in and broke it up, and then he apparently went to the basement and killed himself with a gun.
. . .
I still have a difficult trying to reconcile the times gaming with the people in that family and what happened the years afterwards. I guess it is no different than in real life where people change over the years and you don't see or chat with them everyday.

The group I play with now. The group I led a guild with four years ago. The guys I play LoL with, or BF4 or name another online game. The guys that sit in my vent with me. It's the same group I started playing with in 2005/2006. I've stayed with them when traveling. They've stayed with me when in Vancouver.
The game created some actual legitimate long term friendships, and I think that's why I always end up coming back.
What is the best item everyone has gotten from their follower missions?
How about Garrison invasion?
I haven't gotten anything that great yet, and I have been at it pretty hard. I guess it is early, but I was hoping the gear rewards might keep pace with the raid schedule. So far I've gotten a 621 Shoulder.

I need to start looking into my Garrison followers a bit better. I don't seem to have a great spread of abilities. They're also levelling pretty slowly. I think I only have 3 or 4 at 100.
