I wonder if they can't charge him for things related to the disappearance so they're trying to keep him in custody as long as they can for other things. Travis Vader comes to mind.

While Garland had already confessed to stealing Matthew Hartley's identity in the 1990s when he was hiding out in Vancouver, the new charge laid this weekend relates to the recent use of that same identity and allows police to keep him remanded in custody until at least tomorrow.

Bizarre side note about this guy. Didn't just steal the identity, but went to trial and ended up winning around insurability of earnings made under false identity.
Quote:
Douglas Garland’s time on the lam was the subject of a bizarre epilogue years later, when he fought the federal government in court over employment insurance benefits.
Douglas Garland had collected employment insurance benefits after getting fired from Can Test Ltd., a Vancouver laboratory firm where he worked between 1992 and 1997. The government later ruled that his earnings weren’t insurable because worked under a false identity.
Douglas Garland appealed that decision to the Tax Court of Canada — and won, following a trial where he represented himself.
...
Although Garland concealed his identity, the judge ruled he performed legitimate work and the deceit shouldn’t negate his ability to collect benefits.

So a guy as smart and resourceful as he appears to be (for better or worse), would decide to hastily dump key evidence in his own farm?
Obviously various dynamics at play here, especially if just a person of interest; the cops going full out on a search is probably as putting the screws to him mentally by show of manpower, than thinking they are finding anything walking through the grass.
Also though, are the cops just investigating him because he was related to a family member and has a criminal past? A criminal past that doesnt seem to show violent crime? He probably went to the estate sale as an extended relative of the people involved, and then his name pops up in the database when family lists names of extended relatives (common law) that they know, or they know showed up to the sale...and being the lone criminal in the family, he automatically gets extra attention, in a case that had no leads for the first day or so.

Except don't they have surveillance on the/his truck several times in the neighborhood? As in making more than one trip to the house? If the timing of the truck being at the house is lining up with the time they were kidnapped (ie after 10pm) then that's pretty suspicious.

I haven't followed as closely as others, but weren't they looking for the green truck before anything else? Then they got the tip about a green truck and then they find out he has a connection and criminal past.

I found this other forum, WebSleuths, which appears to be crime hobbyists like we are to the Calgary Flames. They have a very extensive thread - well three - on this case. While I've only browsed through, they appear to find stuff much quicker than the media has - they had the identity of the person of interest yesterday, for example. They have all sorts of information on patents and companies the grandfather was involved in, and naturally many theories about this whole ordeal.
Unfortunately their threads have a lot of repetitious posts so it's quite a bit to go through. Something to keep an eye on, anyway.

One poster noticed the Amber Alert states Nathan may be in the company of his grandfather Alvin Liknes, a white male, 6 feet tall, 200 lbs with grey and blond hair, black shorts. Alvin has a distinctive walk., but only gives a physical description of his grandmother. Probably an unintentional oversight, but an interesting catch.
Another posted figured out one of grandfather's daughters was shot by her ex-husband in 2006 in Okotoks. The shooter was just released from his halfway house in June they believe. This is also the woman who claimed her breast implants saved her life in the shooting and the story went viral.

At the very least it's something to keep an eye on. This event has so many strange links.

Scum always floats to the top? I guess all those unsolved murders and child abductions will just figure themselves out eh? History has totally shown us that.
What a maroon.
