GOAT!

This thread is like 15 pages long, so I haven't gone through it, but I sure someone has already drawn attention to the fact that we used the 34th overall pick on a goalie.

hehehe, yeah I had a tone. I knew nothing of McDonald, but how can I hate the guy when we share the same surname?

Really like this part

The good news is that the general trend of teams drafting better in recent years includes the drafting of those enigmatic goaltenders. I took the above figure that 26% of goalies drafted in rounds one or two since 1995 are (or were) No. 1 goalies and split the sample period in half. #Sure enough, there's been an even greater success rate lately. If you go back only as far as 2003, 33% of goalies drafted in rounds one or two between then and 2011 are expected to be NHL starters next year.

It's nice to see that he seems to be making linear progression. Also, facing a lot of rubber is a good sign that he's not getting carried by his defense

I see there's a Rod Macdonald defending him in the comments. Relative I assume.

What are the odds of him playing at the World Juniors next year? I don't know much about junior aged goaltenders.

Its worth noting that although he is third in the league in save percentage, the two goalies ahead of him are two years older.

It's also worth mentioning that he's got 5 EN goals and 3 assists this season, which shows he's working on his puck-moving goaltender skills.
Demko has 2 assists and 0 EN goals.

I watched McDonald play last week against Cape Breton.
He had a lot of rubber fired his way in the 1st but was impressively solid. Seems like the type of goalie that you need to score garbage goals against. If he sees it, he'll stop it.
Very confident in the net, even against a team that's in the playoff positioning hunt with his team.
IIRC he was 2nd star.
Phone's about to die, will post more later

I still like Demko more, but McDonald is the one with the higher upside given his athleticism. Will be interesting to see how these two goalies turn out in the future.

I look at the fact that, while watching Gaudreau and Arnold, the Flames probably saw more of Demko than anyone and decided to go a different route on draft day. I have faith that they made the right choice. MacDonald looks good right now, his numbers are very good playing for a middling team in the No Defense League. I liked the pick at the draft and I still like it now. MM is a legit high end G prospect.
