And at this point it was still 9000 meters in the air, only 1000 short of its prior altitude when it lost contact over an hour prior. So it's not like it was descending at any rate which would indicate it was about to crash. I bet it's nowhere near this new spot...it could have still went a very long way.

At my company we are able to "ping" the aircraft thru the ACARS system. Tells us position, altitude, fuel etc. This works thru VHF or SATCOM but must be initiated by us. It's not automatic. There are quite a few automatic reports but in cruise it's mostly as the plane goes over a flight plan waypoint.
|
Costs us $250 per vehicle. And I'm pretty sure it's using satalites to track. An undefeatable gps transmitter would be an awesome idea.

Yeah but this is aviation, where a bolt that costs $0.05 at a hardware store ends up being $50 in the aviation certified form...

I was trying to find out it's altitude when the military saw it over Pulau Perak, where did you here 9000 meters?

This article mentions how it was about 1000m lower than the previous altitude of 10000+

The mystery surrounding the missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 has deepened with the Chinese media reporting that several of the passengers' mobile phones were connecting when called by relatives, but the calls were not picked up.
|
Quote:
According to China.org.cn, 19 families have signed a joint statement saying that their family members' cell phones connected, but the calls hung up. The relatives have asked Malaysia Airlines to reveal any information they might be hiding, seeking an explanation for the eerie phone connections. The relatives have complained that the Malaysina Airlines is not responding as actively as it should.
|
Now the question is whether you would get a ringing tone if the phones have no signal

One thing I just thought of was with this going on a TON of attention is now shifted away from Russia.

Means nothing unfortunately, just a twist of the false hope dagger. It would be interesting to see if the cell companies could try to locate the signal though, it might at least answer the land or water question if they can't locate any of them.

If so, can't they just trace through gps on their phones? If the calls are going through should not be that hard for them to pin point coordinates based on 1 of the 19 possible phones

The NPR article is suggesting that the calls aren't getting through, that the carrier is searching for the phone and whole it does the ring sounds are being generated.

The altitude thing...
Many people reported seeing the plane extremely low in that area: http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/missing-mal...to-sea-1439730
If it were indeed that low, they passed quite a few airports where they could have potentially landed. (I don't knwo if each runway was capable of receiving a 777 though, and who knows if they were lit up at that time of night)
Large map or airports in the area:

A Canadian aviation expert chimed in saying what the plane did was to deliberately avoid being detected by radar by flying at a lower altitude.
He thought the plane could have been heading to some military base in Sri Lanka or India from this flight path.

That's flying the wrong way to Sri Lanka and India though.

I read that the captain had a 777 simulator in his house
With the amount of fuel on board, the plane could have gone many places:

A flight simulator in his house seems like the kind of thing that would be just absolutely par for the course for a pilot.

Exactly. The article paints him as an aviation nut - just what I would expect from a pilot. You don't get into that profession by accident.
