I don't get how that is a 5 minute penalty and the hit on Bouma on Wednesday was nothing.

It's not the official's fault. Boarding or checking from behind + injury to the head = automatic major and game misconduct. There is zero leeway for the officials on that call. Smid hit him between the numbers. The moment the referee saw the cut to King, his fate was sealed.
