No kidding. These guys are the Forrest Gumps of NHL goaltenders. You never know what you are going to get when either of them are in the net.

Calgary goaltending is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're going to get

Berra starting tomorrow.

As per #Flames head coach Bob Hartley, Reto Berra will start tomorrow vs. the #Blackhawks.

I have to say, after a good chunk of games from both guys... I really have no idea who is better. Berra seems to have more flash and athleticism, Ramo more calm and focus.
It's like having the two best parts about Kipper split into two different goaltenders, but leaving both fairly lacking as a whole.
Numbers aside, both let in their fair share of embarrassing goals, both are playing behind a poor team, both have shown stretches of good potential, but neither has done much to impress.
If one is better than the other it's marginal, but I can't see how anyone at this point would like/dislike one without feeling pretty much the exact same about the other.

I'm leaning towards Ramo being the better goaltender but he doesn't seem to have enough consistency to step up to the next level. Berra does seem to have a lot of raw potential that he has to get under control. I'm surprised he doesn't slam into the side boards when he slides across the crease.

Powerplay Quarterback

The real question for me is whether or not one of them will be able to put it all together.

With the exception of 2011-2012, Ramo's numbers are fairly similar to Miikka's over the last 5 years and our current team is much worse.

You'd need to get Berra another season in the NHL to rightfully compare the two as NHL goaltenders.
Berra really needs to reign in his movement. Composure seems to be an issue as well. But hey, first NHL season and all.
Ramo looks better because he is technically better due to his previous stint and the fact he's played at a higher level of hockey than Berra for a longer period of time. The thing for me is though is that it's only made Ramo marginally better than Berra at this point. I feel that giving up so early on Berra would be a mistake but his leash certainly needs to be short. I've convinced myself Berra should get another one year deal to prove he really belongs. After next season though, all bets are off as Gillies and Ortio will be knocking on the door pretty hard.

Problem for Berra is that his contract is up at the end of the season and Ramo's isn't. I believe Burke and the incoming GM will want to upgrade the position which means the Berra is possibly a candidate not to be retained unless they can work out a trade for Ramo.

I feel Ramo has played well enough to have a couple of teams interested in his services as a capable back up. Will be interesting to see how this all shakes down in the off season.
An argument could be made that if Hartley and the coaching staff stick around for next year that since they haven't been shy about their love of Berra that he could be the one to stay.

Well it's looking more and more like Joey Mac won't be resigned so I'd really like to see Berra with another contract, even if he spends most of next year in Abby. Unless Roy totally kills it with his recent callup to the Heat, which I don't see happening.

Ramo's contract will make him hard to deal if he's just going to be a backup. I supposed retained salary is a way to fix that, but unless the Flames can significantly upgrade, I don't think it's worth it for a rebuild.
I'm wondering how many teams out there would be interested in Berra as a free agent next season. Unless he completely craps the bed, I think he's done enough to justify a one year deal somewhere. At the same time, I don't think the Flames wouldn't want to lose him for nothing if he does have some potential value (i.e. with another year under his belt).

I was thinking, oh oh a deals been made. On the plus side, maybe we'll see Ortio.

Reto Berra vs. Karri Ramo
I'm getting really frustrated with shots beating Berra over his shoulder. Tall goalies need to stand up! #shadesofturek

Should've been out of the crease to challenge on that shot.
