As an outsider to the two Alberta teams, that has seen a lot of Oilers and Flames hockey over the last few years, the Flames are actually closer to completing their rebuild than the Oilers...
EDIT:
I don't think anyone told them that at some point you need big centers, d-men and goalies...
I realize that a lot could change for the Oiler's in the next 80 games but there still seems to be significant flaws with that Oiler's team.
Tonight's game is the perfect example of what I have been saying for a couple of years. I realize that this is not an original idea and others have said it as well but when you embrace the race for last place philosophy losing becomes acceptable. I have to admit, by the end of last season I was hoping to end up with the first overall pick but now I'm glad that our group still competed til the end. It helps that it looks like our pick at #6 appears to be a guy that will end up as a decent player in this league.
Duchene > Hall ... Just awesome (or was Duchene in with Tavares and Hedman?)
Whatever, I love seeing the Oilers suffer...especially when any fans I know have aggressively argued with me whenever I try to point out how mismanaged they've been over the past 5+ years
What's hilarious is that the Oilers problems are the exact same ones most fans here have realized for years. No commitment to defense, an unwillingness to score the ugly goals, and suspect goaltending.
Nothing has changed one bit. But only now is the media starting to clue in that maybe the Oilers hype was false.
Probably the worst management in pro sports combined with the most delusional fanbase in pro sports. That's a special combination my friends.

I wonder if both sides are peeved with how the Brad Richards thing played out with Torts last playoffs. Obviously MacLean is buddies with Richards and probably hasn't gotten over Tortorella scratching Richards. You would think MacLean and the network would get over it, but doesn't look like they have.
Of course Tortorella had every right to scratch Richards when his job was on the line, and with how lousy Richards was in the playoffs. He had all of one point during their run, and Torts needed to do something when the Rangers were down 3-0 to the Bruins. I actually liked the move, even though it was a huge risk, and in large part cost him his job in the end. Richards honestly didn't deserve to play, and it probably killed Torts to do so with how well Richards played for him in 2004.

I know it's still only 2 games into the season... But what if the oilers do the same thing again that they have done year after year? I just wonder what response they would have. Firing Lowe really wouldn't be enough at this point. You would be talking about a team that seemingly hit rock bottom 4 years ago and are still there. I think they would have to make the realization that a big trade is needed... That it would be time for one of the kids to be traded for something. Probably either gagne or yakupov or both.
They just showed the highlights of the Oilers-Nucks game, and showed Torts and Acton yelling at each other. Has anyone else noticed how much Keith Acton looks like the Yellow B-tard from Sin City?

A couple of years more and fans will start to get nervous about losing those top picks to free agency.
No chance. All of the Oilers' star players are just waiting for the ink to dry on their $6.0 m multi-year deals.
Honestly, I am hard pressed to see how this team will possibly finish ahead of the Flames in the standings this year. If the Oilers somehow manage to do so, then it sure won't be by much. I see yet another lottery pick in their future.

Just wait until they get Messier on board and "Operation 80's" goes into full effect.
I still can't believe that I was once jealous of the Oilers. I remember once they drafted Hall and we re-signed Jokinen being mad that we didn't have any young studs coming up, Pierre's "something special" comments got to me. Almost 4 years since then and I still can't believe I was actually envious of them. Oh how times have changed. Thank god the Oiler media love fest is starting to end.

2011: Landeskog, Huberdeau > RNH (Hamilton is close too).
2010: Can't argue with the 2010 pick (Hall over Seguin). I would have drafted the center at the time, but Seguin hasn't exactly been lights out.
I really think they missed in both 2011 and 2012. RNH is and remains so undersized that I would have been nervous about picking him. But then after they picked him, they played him right away. Stupid. The Yakupov pick was even worse. He might have been the talking heads BPA, but I certainly wasn't convinced at the time - Galchenyuk (a center) was very intriguing and taking a swing at one of the 10 defenseman (by perhaps trading down a few slots and filling other areas) would have been prudent.
Picking No. 1 and then having the picks play right away was, IMO, an effort to keep the hype train in Edmonton rolling. They missed on picks in 2011/12, sold the fan group that they had picked their own Crosby/Malkin or Toews/Kane and rushed the players to keep their jobs (Lowe).
When Flames fans cry out for more time for the "kids", putting too high of expectations on Monahan/Baertchi/Brodie or moan/groan about the vets Calgary has, the icetime they get or the fact that they aren't all traded for 20 year olds, take a look up north.

edmontons biggest problem is they fail to properly develop their players. There was a bit of a backlash here when some the flames prospects were criticized by our management in regards to their complete game. The oiler kids have been developed to play pond hockey rather then NHL hockey and still commit those rookie mistakes in their 4th year. You could see this trainwreck coming for awhile. In the NHL you NEED to be able play defense if you want to be successful.
