Phil Kessel says John Scott told him he was going to jump him. "He's a big boy. I just backed up."

John Scott claims that Kessel said "Alright, let's do it" when he told Phil he had to fight him. (Via Buff News)

“I can understand his idea behind it. I obviously thought our guy got taken advantage of the shift before. I was trying to stick up for him, and send a message to Toronto,” said Scott.

“I just lined up with him, and I knew I had to have a response for what happened the shift before, and I said, ‘Phil, we’re going to have to go here. Just to let you know,’” Scott claimed.
What did Kessel say to him?
"‘Alright, let's do it,’” Scott claims.

“I’ve never seen a stick-swing like that. He’s gotta do what he’s gotta do. It was an even fight if he has his stick. I didn’t have anything,” said Scott. “Phil’s OK. He came out the better end of it. I have bruises all over my leg.”

HAHAHA... right.
Someone should tell Scott to shut his mouth before he makes himself look like even more of an idiot.

LOL. If this is a star player from the Flames getting jumped by a 270 pound goon no one would take issue with the slashes.

The huge homers wouldn't have an issue with them. But anyone objective would have an issue with Kessel slashing and spearing a player who is tied up.

Clarkson's suspension now official:
“@NHLPlayerSafety: David Clarkson has been automatically suspended 10 regular-season games for leaving bench on an illegal line change to join an altercation.”

Did Scott break the fighting code?
Quote:
"It was pretty stupid, right? He said he was going to jump me...I just backed up," explained Kessel afterwards.
"What are you going to do? He's a big boy, so if he's coming after me, what am I going to do, right?"
|
Quote:
"I tried to defuse the situation by putting Kessel, Bozak, and Ashton on the ice (against Scott's line), feeling that there was no threat to something and more carrying on, but obviously I was wrong," said Carlyle.

The first comment (from a Leafs fan) on the TSN story is priceless. "waaah, it's totally biased and unfair that my team's player got an automatic suspension."

Since when is it called "jumping" when Scott told Kessel what's going to happen? It's not like he came up from behind and Bertuzzied him.
He should of just skated away without trying to break his ankles

Regardless of who started it...the second Kessel swing is where I think he should be held accountable. The first one...sure blame it on being attacked...but the second one he clearly decides to make another swing once Scott was in a crowd of people and Kessel was no longer being threatened. Big ##### move IMO.

I'd say give him 2 regular season games. You can't, under any circumstances, use your stick as a weapon.
I find it laughable that Carlyle talks about 'the code' after Kessel went swinging and jabbing with his stick. I understand he was obviously terrified and probably on the verge of wetting himself, but you don't use the stick as a weapon. Never.

Thats still not an excuse. I hope McGratton lines up next to Eberle and tell him right before the puck, "I'm taking you out" and start pounding the crap out of him as soon as they drop it.

Except that's not what happened in this case.
Scott Never jumped him, never landed a punch. In fact, he never even threw one at Kessel.

But what people are saying on here is that it is ok as long as you tell the guy you are going to pound him right after the puck is dropped.
Scott tried grabbing him but couldn't because of the lightsabre action.

I'm not sure it's ever okay for the team goon to go after another team's best (and smaller) forward. I don't like it.
But I think what some are saying is that Scott never jumped him, not even close. They talk for a second, Kessel gets his gloves up a bit, Scott drops his and all hell broke loose. It wasn't like Kessel didn't know what was going to happen or he had his back to Scott. He definitely wasn't 'jumped'.

While what other people are saying is that it's ok to use your hockey stick as a weapon as long as you call it "lightsabre action"

I don't know how you came to that conclusion. I'd say most people here are arguing that under no circumstances is it okay for a player to wildly and recklessly swing their stick at other players or to hack and spear someone who is tied up by team mates and referees. Kessel had a lot of options to remove himself from this situation without endangering others. I hope Kessel gets suspended for 10 games.

Then Eberle can skate away without ankle slashing or just turtle. Kessel could of high tailed out of there but instead decided to carve up his ankles in the progress

There's no reasonable explanation why Kessel couldn't outskate John Scott. Just a dirty play on Kessel's part. The second and third attempts at stickwork were particularly cowardly.
