The whole tipping system is ridiculous. Why can't restaurants just pay their staff more money? Sure, food prices would probably go up, but I think it's worth it to get rid of this terribly flawed system.

I tip 20% but typically I have a 3 year old with me - so I think it is only fair. She's well behaved but still rather messy and overall more work for the server.

I will tip 15% if the service is outstanding. I deduct 5% for each 'problem' until it is zero, so three strikes and you're out. Don't really care about the social conformity aspect of this at all. No one ever gave me tips working in retail when I was younger even though it was heavy on customer service... in fact you weren't even allowed to keep them if you were tipped. It's utter BS that we tip just because we always have IMO. Pay your own damned staff restaurant owners, I don't see how it's my job. Luckily min wage will probably eventually solve this because I'm not tipping at all if prices keep going up.
And no they aren't going to spit in my food or do anything else. I don't eat out that often for them to remember me and I doubt they're smart enough to remember me anyway even if I did.

Yes. Ridiculous. Even if you assembled something for me (Subway, Donair place), why are you asking for a tip, when I'm standing up at your counter to get my food? The price is on a big board over my head. That's the price. It actually really annoys me when places like that ask for a tip. Like the tip jar at a fricken liquor store? F-off. Oh hey, let me toss you a little something extra for sitting on that stool and holding a scanner gun and then pressing a few buttons.

Simply because people are stupid, and the restaurant with no tipping and higher prices will appear to be more expensive and will lose business.

In my younger days I tipped the pretty ones more! Now I find I tip the older servers more and I feel they probably will put the tip to better use.
If its the neighboorhood pub they always are getting 20% as I know it will result in the odd free shot and reserved good seating for sports games and prizes!

Why Restaurants Are Ditching The Switch To No Tipping
http://www.npr.org/sections/thesalt/...ntent=20160515
The idea has been to rectify a basic pay unfairness to even out the pay between tipped and untipped employees. Dishwashers and cooks at the back of the house don't earn as much money as waiters because they don't get tips.
So, do away with tipping, raise menu prices a little bit, and pay everyone a higher wage.
But that experiment has failed at some restaurants.

^^ Ivar's had tipping? That's kind of a stretch for a place that is barely a step from being fast food. Unless they were talking about the only one in Seattle that was a sit down type restaurant.
Anyway, it's prices were already abnormally high for having the privilege of being pecked at by seagulls and pigeons, and trying to find a table without bird crap on it.

I tipped 15 per cent way back when 10-12 was standard, because I don't like to be cheap. I kept tipping 15 per cent. Now I'm cheap? What the heck changed?

15% is my default.
I will go up to 20% if the service was exceptional.
I will drop it down if the service was poor, unless it is outside the servers control, ie: they tell me the kitchen is backed up.

Prices should go up with inflation but a percentage tip should never change. How did it go from 10% to 15% to 20%?
I just had a lunch at a pub and the grautity for large parties went from 18% to 27% compared to the last time I remember eating there. The definition of large party is changing itself. We had 5 people!

I cut back to 12% with the increase to minimum wage. In the US in states with low minimum wage I tip less.
I do not tip based on service.

I generally tip 20% when I frequent restaurants where I'm a regular in the manner that a patron of the arts often donates money to an artist to help ensure that art can be produced. I prefer the restaurants in question keep operating because I'm very particular NAY picky and because it's food so I appreciate any extra care it receives.

GST = Goods and Services Tax. That's my tip.
Just kidding. I'm usually 15-18% now because society demands it.

15 percent if they're adequate at their job. 20% if it's great service and I'm drinking.
The ones I find weird are small sit down breakfast or lunch places. They may only come by once or twice and the price may only be 10$ but I'll leave a twoonie which is 20%.

Freakonomics just had a podcast on this with a restaurant in New York. That was, according to the resto, a success for them.
I feel like if they are losing servers, they haven't priced the wages correctly. Increase wages to appease servers, keep no tipping policy.
