Radical thinking, I know.
Every sub place I've ever been to let's you pick the toppings. However, there's a profound difference between a place like Cafe Mauro (here in Calgary, which is a small high-end sandwich place) and Subway; the ingredients at the latter are mediocre at best, so the taste *needs* to be modified by some kind of over-riding flavour, like a sauce or mustard, imo.

It's like someone wanting a burger without any ketchup or mustard. It's weird, unnatural, and probably indicative of a misspent childhood and possibly severe psychological issues.

PS: Mr. Sub is way better than Subway. But I'd still be dubious about no sauce.

I'd like to know what you guys consider a lot of sauce?

Instead of saying "a little" try saying "one line". That way you're guaranteed to get one line of sauce down your sub?

If you have ever worked on the road or travel for business you quickly find out that low fat/sodium food isn't always easily attainable. Subway isn't anything special but it's a better alternative to fast food or restaurant food every day.

If you haven't eaten at Cafe Mauro, then you have no idea how mind blowing this information is.

I'm pretty sure I was being obviously facetious. I don't seriously think that people who like Subway subs without sauce are muy loco.

I am serious that once you've had a sub made with quality ingredients, it'll change your willingness to put up with mere mediocrity, though. Like anything else, it's all good until you've had great, then good becomes blah.

Asking for a little or one line usually results in the same thing at Subway.

A giant blast of mayo/mustard/whatever that usually ends up completely dominting the sub.

It isn't the fault of the employees though. The openings on the tips of the sauce dispensers are just too big.

I asked my local sandwhich artist once why they couldn't just put a smaller amount of sauce on the sub. They told me that the plastic tips get warped from the heat of washing when it comes time to sanitize them.

Not sure if that is really the case, but regardless the tip openings are too big and should be reduced to allow better sauce control.

I'd write a letter to coporate to try and rectify the issue but I just can't care that much. I don't go to Subway much anymore anyway as I've gotten sick of their low quality ingredients.

Press'd which now has something like 9 locations in Edmonton makes a much better sandwhich when I'm in the mood.

I've eaten there several times. Hearing that a specialty, high end sandwich place is better than a fast food franchise isn't exactly earth shattering.

Is it as earth-shattering as you letting us know that Subway lets you pick the toppings, as I was originally commenting on? If you're going to get all het up about my laughing at the idea of people carefully picking out the least crappy of the ingredients to make a sub, at least mention the condescension and arrogance instead of harping on some "master of the obvious" schtick that you yourself were first to employ.

Anyway, if people were aware that quality isn't found at fast food franchises, how would Timmys dominate the market? People DON'T generally perceive the difference, or else mass marketed mediocrity wouldn't win out over small businesses that cost a little more for a much better product. Marketing works, people are lazy thinkers and just go with what they know and assume it must be good because it's popular, and how would it get to be popular if it wasn't good?

Personally, I am cool with the idea that my favourite franchise eating place, Wendy's, objectively has burgers that are nowhere near as good as somewhere like Burger Inn or Boogies. If someone tells me that a Baconator is really a crappy mass of salt, grease, and bread, I'd fully agree and munch away anyway, not bothering to try and argue that it's the food that keeps bringing me back there. It's habit, marketing, and giant doses of sugar and fat shocking my reptile brain with positive messages despite myself.

I laugh at Subway connoisseurs, you can laugh at my incipient heart attack, everyone gets to laugh and all is good..

I was just hoping you'd pick up that you were being condescending, for zero reason, on your own. Glad you did.

As far as the second paragraph, the only answer can be convenience and marketing. Which is too bad. However I myself get coffee there on occasion as a result of convenience (or if someone else is buying) so we all fall into the trap once in a while.

Also, picking your own topping or feeling that too much sauce ruins your sandwich is hardly being a connoisseur. Unless you have a very broad definition of what that is.

They've been absolutely killing it with some of their new food though.

Their Jalapeno burgers are easily the best tasting frozen burger I've ever had.

Funny that you say everyone hates Superstore but Loblaws owns #2 & #3

I don't shop at Superstore because I find their stores a train wreck. I do, however, admit that the PC brand of products is pretty good stuff.

In the west, PC is primarily only available at Superstore (and Shoppers now, but that's only recently), but there are a lot of Loblaws branded supermarkets in Ontario and Quebec that are smaller, normal supermarkets.

For a lot of Canadians, you can get PC products at your regular store and not only at the hellscape that is the Superstore.

In smaller areas there is also No Frills, which if you can believe it, is a cheaper version of SuperStore

My favourite Loblaw banner is YIG, which stands for "Your Independent Grocer". Yes, so independent they are owned by one of Canada's largest companies...
