I guess it depends on the player coming back with a bad contract. If its a "meh" player that will not be worth much more than a 4th-5th round at the deadline then i would say no to the trade. Even with a bad contract i don't see teams giving up a 1st to go along with it at this time. I do think Cammi will be able to fetch a 1st at the deadline.
I am not worried about Cammi sulking this year if he is on the flames. This is a contract year and he will play his heart out to make sure quality teams want him at the deadline, and that he can sign a better contract going forward.
Cammi at least can see that his time in Calgary, if he truly wants out, is very close to being over. The player i am more concerned with is Tanguay. He has 3 years left and if he is not traded this summer, he could come in and think he has a 2-3 year jail sentence without much possibilty of parole. Granted its a very nice paying jail sentence.LOL.

There are teams that are going to miss out on the guys they want; either thinking that have a trade in place with a team at the draft, only to have another team swoop in and over more, and same with UFA time...teams have targeted players that are going to be bought out or just normal UFA's, and then they miss out.
Those teams are then that much more desperate to add a goal scorer like Cammalleri post the first week or two of July...the asking price, and return, can go up.
However, Feaster wants to make an impact in the next 10 days, and some splashes, as he often seems to feel the need to do for whatever reason (job justification?) around draft time. For Regher, it was needing to be clearing his and Kotalik's salary off the books to take a run at Richards a week later.
Cammalleri is the biggest chip Feaster has both now, and post July 5th....I think Feaster has too much of an itchy trigger finger to wait for the better offers post July 5th, and instead get caught up in the frenzy at the draft.
|
Issue with that is the risk you take on waiting it out.
Trades in today's NHL are extremely difficult to pull off compared to the pre-cap era. I think if you have a trade for Cammi that's a fit, you have to pull the trigger regardless of if it's before or after the draft.

If they trade Cammalleri, and assuming Kipper retires, their cap payroll would be at about $34.3M, with 5 or 6 guys to re-sign / add (bit all of them would be pretty cheap)
If they were to keep him until the deadline, it would cost them about $4.5M of his $7M salary (and slightly less for the cap).
Why not eat half his salary and trade him now? It would cost about the same, and if I were a contender, I would rather have him the whole year instead of trying to insert him at the deadline.
Also, I would rather eat salary than take on another bad contract as it's cleaner. However, if a bad contract meant a better return, then it is worth considering.

It depends. Do the Flames want an asset for the draft and start of the season or do they want an asset later on. My guess is they want something sooner rather than later.

Cammelleri is an ideal asset to have at the trade deadline - instant offence, good playoff record, expiring contract.... I think the Flames get more then than now. There's no benefit to firing that bullet too early - nothing is going to make the Flames a contender this year

Marketable in terms of value as a hockey player. He's skilled, only 30, seems to be well liked by teammates, and performed well in the playoffs with the Canadiens.
I think the whole contract thing is not as big a deal as some are making it out to be. He's got one year left on the contract which is very low risk for a team taking him on. No need to take a bad contract for a player that has only one year left at that price. If we do - it should be a similar player that is coming off the books after one year.
Of course his value could go up as it gets closer to the start of the season and/or towards the deadline.

FYI...my understanding is there are a few teams in on Cammalleri now. It all depends if Flames want draft choices or current roster players in return. If current roster players a deal might wait till July.

Here's hoping that they want picks, and not roster players. Let the kids play.

I'd love to know if Roger has heard any rumblings about the teams potentially in play. At least give us something to go crazy with in terms of fantasy trade proposals.

So if i am reading this correctly, Roger is saying Cammi will not be wearing a flames uniform come September. Thought they might hold out to the deadline.
If you are still around Roger, have you heard anything about Tanguay?

Understandable, thanks for the heads up Roger!
Ok, so Eastern trading partners... I'm thinking Ottawa is the most obvious choice.
They draft 17th and 78th in the first three rounds of the draft.
Let's go with Cammy for Mark Stone (RW) and a 3rd rounder.

wonder if the islanders would be interested in a scoring, veteran scoring winger?

I remember reading, about a week ago, on Millions twitter account, that he thought teams with more than 1 2nd round pick would be what the flames are looking for.
Could Montreal be the team out east? Seems doubtful considering the way he left, but they do have 3 2nd round draft picks.
