Drouin actually did even better when MacKinnon was out of the lineup, and his hands are something that are unaffected by MacKinnon.
I'm all about taking a Center and god knows we need one ... but as time goes on, I'm liking Drouin more and more.
However, I'm a pessimist and still think we finish out of the top 4 picks, and in that case I'm hoping for Lindholm.

Can anyone shed a little light on Klimchuk? I haven't followed him since he left calgary minor hockey. Haven't heard any mention of him as a preference for one of our later 1st round picks. Seems like a good 1st round for the local kids, shinkaruk, morrissey and klimchuk.

Assuming we get the 2nd pick and Jones goes 1st, what would it take to pull a Burke and get the 3rd overall pick to select both MacKinnon and Drouin?

Oh I wouldn't be too concerned.
Can you imagine getzlaf/perry, sedins, datsyuk, parise/koivu? That's the bulk of the remaining schedule.
I once shared your fear, but embrace it now. Barring a kipper sideshow, we're looking at blowouts of Babchuk proportions.

1st (PIT), 1st (STL) and Cammalleri or Giordano with Flames retaining 50% of their salary is pretty much the best offer I can think they would be able to make. Even then I doubt it would be enough.

STL 1st, PIT 1st, CGY 3rd, Giordano to FLA, for 3rd overall, FLA 4th (assuming defense is what they're trying to shore up with Jones, already having the likes of Huberdeau and Grimaldi in the system, but they just miss out)
1. COL - S. Jones
2. CGY - N. MacKinnon
3. CGY (FLA) - J. Drouin
Additionally we deal one of our excess LWs that we should've dealt yesterday for more picks (1st or 2nd+) use this to draft a quality D. Would need to make room for likes of Baertschi / Drouin anyways.
"Dream" scenario, more or less. Hah, would be amazing though.

If the Flames somehow get the 1st pick, who do we select? Jones?

I personally really like him from what I have seen this season.
Some scouts question his skating ability, but from I have seen it actually appears to be a strength of his. He may not have the most fluent of strides but is explosive nonetheless, and he does possess good top end speed.
My favourite part of his game is his shot though, he can get it off extremely quick and surprisingly hard. I definitely think he projects as a goal scorer moving forward, and I would personally be really happy if we took a flyer on him with the Pittsburgh pick.
With that said he is on the smaller side and needs to add some muscle to become stronger on the puck. He also has some deficiencies in his defensive game that will need to be improved upon moving forward.
When factoring in his size and the position he plays (LW) I think Calgary may end up looking past him due to the current make up of the team, and the organizational strength on the left side however.

Forward.
That's all I'm going to say. Defenceman are the new goalies. See Trevor Kidd.

Crosby had roughly double the points Mackinnon did in the Q. The level of dominance between them isn't even close. The only time they were on similar trajectories was before junior which is meaningless at this point when comparing the 2. Crosby's path was non-stop growth the whole way. The level at which Mackinnon dominates definitely has a smaller gap than what Crosby had, and that gap has been closing. That never really happened with Crosby. I just think that you really need to consider trajectory (and not so much the past) to predict the future.
And as mentioned, when Mackinnon was out, Drouin still dominated. At this point, it's difficult to tell who benefits for from whom. I remember back when Pat Falloon was the big name and people thought that Ray Whitney was benefiting from playing with him. We all know what happened there.

At least Trevor Kidd was a serviceable starter for a few years. See Brent Krahn, Leland Irving etc...

That's my biggest fear. Chucko was Zajac's linemate as well...

But Chucko wasn't horrible... his concussions were horrible. I bet he would have been a player if not for them - though I do question the ceiling, I bet he would be a contributing NHL player.

Mackinnon put up over a PPG at 16 when Drouin played 25 games so hard to think that his numbers are being driven by Drouin when he has shown he can score at a high rate without him.

Military service is a non-issue for Finns. Even for normal people it's from 165 to 347 days and athletes get special treatment, meaning they can pretty much mail-in their military service.
For example Olli Jokinen postponed his service until he was 28 and then he was exempted for medical reasons, which is a joke, as there's nothing wrong with his health.
Mikko Koivu did his service 2 years ago. He started after the regular season and basically did it during the summer. For example every day Mikko spent with the national team counted were counted as service days. I'm pretty sure he was back with the Wild in time for the training camp. Mikael Granlund did his service at the same time as Mikko.
So really, it's a total non-issue. If I was Barkov, I would postpone my service as long as possible, until 2025. I think there's a real possibility that we have moved on from mandatory service to voluntary service/paid army by then. And if not, just get exempted like Jokinen or mail it in, like Koivu.

If the Flames get the 1st overall pick, I'd like to see them trade it to the Avs...let them pick Jones.
What do you think the Avs would give to trade up from spot #2 or #3??

I'm leaning more to Drouin, looks more likely as an NHL scorer. Just can't ignore the talent.
Flames better not be drafting by position, like making sure they draft a center, BPA all the way.

The only way to get a true #1 center is to draft him, every few years one becomes available through a trade but if one is available I think you have to take him. There almost always seems to be a winger avaialble through trade or free agency.
I still think MacKinnon is the BPA though
