Maybe because a lot of Canadians are in Florida and it may help attendance to have the Leafs and Habs visit multitple times a season. Just a guess because geographically it doesn't make a lot of sense.

That's a one sided beat down if I ever saw one.
Going to have to figure out to play hockey on the coast, and the desert or this new divisional alignment is going to be painful for us.
|
All the more reason to rebuild as this current core of Flames have really struggled against the Pacific division over the years for whatever reason. It's going to suck to have to see more Coyotes and Ducks games.

Yeah, me too. This is going to make splitting up season tickets a whole lot more interesting and not just a game of avoiding the jackets and wild.

Really not liking the new alignment for us, hate games against Phoenix/California teams. If Phoenix moves to Seattle it might be tolerable, or if it gets realigned again after the 2013/14 season.

Wouldn't it just be the same boring hockey team, just with new jerseys?

I love it. Almost double the games against Eastern Conference teams is huge. Exciting hockey with a variety of teams. Plus it's not really much difference for us against the Pacific teams than it is now. In the old format we would play 4 games against those teams. In this new format we play 5 and the odd time only 4.
We basically sacrifice all that divisional play for more games against the East which is great!
Current configuration:
Own Division x 6 = 24 games
Own Conference x 4 = 40 games
Other Conference = 18 games
New Configuration:
Own Division x 5 (or 4 for one team) = 29 games
Own Conference x 3 = 21 games
Other Conference x 2 games each team = 32 games

So I'm thinking of how the future will look with 32 teams in the league (this realignment seems to be pointing in that direction). My idea is to have 4 divisions in each conference. Best two teams in each division play in a divisional playoff and then the winner of the divisional championships are re-seeded according to standings. Finals are winner of West vs. Winner of East.
As for the season breakdown it would look something like this:
Divisional play - 4 games against 3 teams:
4 x 3 = 12 games
Non Divisional conference play - 3 games against 12 teams:
3 x 12 = 36
Out of Conference play - 2 games against 16 teams:
2 x 16 = 32
Total = 80 games
If they want to keep an 82 game schedule, they can play an extra 2 games within the division. So 4 games against one opponent and 5 games against 2 opponents.

I don't mind this new realignment but... I would of swapped Tampa and Florida with the Rangers and the Islanders
Though division D... the amount of different rivalries in it, it's going to be damn good hockey to watch

The big sacrifice is all the conference play (inter-division) for the increase in games against the eastern teams.

It works out to 3 less games against the wild. So I'm pretty damn happy!

That's a good point. We also get 3 less games against the Avs which is good too and 1 or 2 less games against the Canucks and Oilers which I don't mind either. The bummer is less games against Detroit and Chicago. I still don't like realignment, the division based scheduling and playoffs are terrible to have. The wildcard crossover is too limited. I've heard that the top 2 in each div followed by the next best 4 teams in each conf would be fairer as there is usually a weaker div.

I"m sure you're all going to miss the extra games against the Wild....
For what it's worth, I'm going to miss the extra games vs. the Flames.

Yes I agree it's pretty stupid for the NHL to have uneven conferences, but since the Flames have the 57% chance I won't complain much.
