Would you rather have Bouwmeester or Phaneuf? Might be an unpopular opinion but I'd take Phaneuf 10/10 times. At least he plays with a hair of intensity.

I thinks he's getting at the return we got for, at the time a promising young d-man. We could of at least got a high draft pick 1st or 2nd or an actual 1st liner. Instead we got...
- 3.5 mil Stajan or gets benched or plays 4th line.
- Hagman who was never his old self.
- Jamal Mayers..

Watch the trade end up being something involving none of the rumoured players... Kulemin + Colborne + pick or something.

I'd rather have Phaneuf.
He's terrible but he's fun to watch (partially because he's terrible).

Why would we move Booth a year after acquiring him? He was good when he was healthy, so he gets a second year where we see if he can stay healthy.
If this deal is true and Nonis was put in place to get it done and does it, what a huge change for Nonis. He got turfed for being unwilling to make a similar deal for Richards.

The Oilers would rather have JayBo or Dion over Gio. They already have like 5 Giordano's

Honestly, I'd rather have Phaneuf at this point. He can actually play physical, and he has a great slap shot. Even thought he most likely won't be what he used to he is still a consistent 30-40 point guy. Bouwmeester hasn't scored 30-40 points since he came here to Calgary. I really don't have as much of a problem with Bouwmeester as many on here have, but he hasn't been that great offensive defenseman he was promised to be when he came here.

From a pure spectator's perspective, Phaneuf is exciting to watch - be it a big shot from the point, a big hit or watching the opposing forward go around him for a goal. Bouwmeester has to be the most boring player in the NHL. Looks bored, plays bored, etc. Not saying that one is better than another, I just know I liked watching Phaneuf more.
As time passes, it'll be interesting to get a better perspective on what happened. New ownership not liking his style, fans/media not liking his abrasiveness, etc., does not add up to the timeline of his firing, only a few days before the start of training camp, evaluations, trades, signings, demotions, etc. As has been said several times already, something happened and the above reasons are just convenient smoke screens.

So much stuff going around
they just had someone on sportsnet say the Canucks were asking Kadri/Gardiner and Burke would say no, but the rest of Leafs management wanted it
another said Gardiner has always been a no go

If Burke was fired for not including Gardiner in the deal that is tragic.

When you can honestly say it would have been better to trade him for nothing, it's disgusting. I believe the Phaneuf trade is pretty much at that point.
Also, I think Kadri is crap, but ditching Luongo's contract and getting Gardiner as a return would be pretty major for the Canucks. Our two rivals would have gotten pretty lucky with D-men this year .... #######s.

I really think there is no chance of Gardiner being part of the deal. I do think Kadri has a lot of upside and could be a top 6 NHL player.
The long and short of this is, if the expectation is Gardiner +, then you will end up taking the view that Toronto won the deal as they won't give up that much. I am sure a lot of Canuck fans are being optimistic and assuming as much as well - they'll be disappointed.

I posted this in the Raptors thread, but what bothers me about the Burke firing is the speculation that he wasn't a "company man" type - basically a politician. Personally, I don't think he deserved to be fired, simply because he wasn't given enough time. In a hardass market like Toronto, they needed a guy to do like Burke to do things his way and at times, set the media straight. Nonis I don't believe is the guy for the job because he rubs me as the guy who'll crack under pressure - whether from media or upper management, to just make a deal for the sake of pulling the trigger. Any deal any team makes with Toronto is thought about extra hard considering the scrutiny it'll go through. I wasn't really a fan of Burke's holier than thou attitude in Anaheim, but no other GM would have held off on deals to maximize value in Toronto they way he did with Kaberle and Schenn. While the team is far from a real playoff contender, he didn't do a horrible job, and I'd go so far to say he actually never lost bigtime on any deal he made - even the Kessel deal (good decision at the time - nobody expected the Leafs to be that bad and draft that high at the time). What a stupid decision by the Leafs to let him go because of how he portrayed himself. Dummies all around.
As for the Canucks wanting value for Luongo - how can they get it? His contract will handcuff a franchise for years to come, and he's proven to not be a big game player consistently. Toronto would be terrible for him, and Nonis if he deals for him will really screw the Leafs for years to come.

As much as I like actual hockey news, it's unfortunate we'll be hearing about this story nonstop until February. Other coverage for Canadian teams denied.

While I do think it was time for him to go, I thought for sure that THEY were going to give him another year. And yeah, the timing is weird for sure.
Not sure if Nonis is much of an improvement. :/ Hopefully not. Love seeing Toronto suffer.
