I didn't really defend anyone so not sure what you are all worked about other than trying to get more personal attacks in at me for no reason as usual.
I am not a fan of the pick as I think they were better guys available at 14 and Jankowski seems much more of a project with high risk than a guy with high reward to me.
I am not going to get all that worked up either way (whether we picked a guy we liked at 14 or with the Jankowski pick) because I really think it is tough to tell what you have when drafting outside the top 5.

I love the high risk, high reward. We need more of these in our system.
If he goes to the OHL and puts up a PPG pace or better, everyone will love this pick.

I think "he will be a number 1 center in two years" is certainly not a neutral view. I think the high reward comments in regards to others around him is a bit of spin as well.
As usual you don;t read what is written and go off on some useless personal rant that has nothing to do with what I posted.

That's just it. Claim its a hell of a pick and don't even say why and its fine. Claim its a risky, off the board move and for some reason its whining.

My completely baseless prediction is this kid is going to be a first or second line centre for team Canada next World Juniors.

Just don't see Jankowski having more (doesn't mean he has less) upside/high reward than Gaunce, Maata, Tervanainen etc.

These qualities combined with his impressive junior pedigree are an attractive package that could see NHL teams sacrificing “upside” for a high character player in Brendan Gaunce, who is already showing the maturity (see video below) and leadership to become an NHL captain

First pairing (#2) defenseman – Given his size, talent and smarts Maatta projects to be a solid two-way first pairing defenseman. While I don’t think he will be good enough to anchor a defense core, I think he would be a great number two guy. Think Mike Richards, but from a defense point of view
|
Gaunce clearly has a chance to be more NHL ready and is much more of a proven player. You can get a much more accurate reading on his skills. The reason we talk about Jankoswki being a project and people like Button talk about him having the chance to be one of the best players in this draft class, is because he's still so raw and so young that we can't get an accurate reading on just what his ceiling as a player is. Making him much more of a prokect, since he has yet to really develop. Again high risk/ high reward

But would a Maatta or a Ceci really be able to help the team in the next 1-2 years? Personally I would say no, and to me that validates picking a high risk/high reward guy like Jankowski all the more.

First thing you did was single out and criticize Caged Great for being optimistic when he seems to be one of the only people who'd researched this kid before the draft.
It's the same old same old with you, not an insult. It's always raining in moonsville.

True, but all these guys are really young. Much is being made of Jankowski's late birthday, but Teravaininen is only 2 days older and Maatta is only 3 weeks older.

Maata is a shutdown the teams top player type and not the offensive talent we need.

This is why I rarely come on this site anymore.
Back in the good ol' days you'd get fellow flames fans opinions (it is a Calgary flames fan forum, no?)
Now it's just who is the biggest stupid head and who can turn the reddest holding their breath.
Good gawd.

I think you guys that feel that drafting Jankowski was a total mistake should head down to the Flames head office Monday morning and apply for a job in their scouting or management dept.
Tell them all about your qualifications for the job.
You obviously feel you can do a better job than the current employees.
Let me know how the interviews go.

Everybody loves John Gaudreau and wishes that he was just a bit taller.
That is exactly, exactly what Jankowski is. A 6'3" John Gaudreau.

Well given the fact that Jankowski was just a couple of days from being an 2013 draft pick there's going to be a perfect opportunity next year to compare him to next years crop and see how wise this pick was.

This pick reminds me of Kreider, but a little more under the radar. Kreider was a fast skilled player that was an unknown because he was a highschool player if I remember correctly. Another comparison is Blake Wheeler, with the off the board high school connection.

I will always have more patience for positivity than negativity. I think it is a healthier way to approach things.
When the same people whine all the time - it gets tiresome.
|
I think the problem automatically assuming anything that questions a move is negative.
I don't recall saying this move won't work. I do recall saying its really risky and not something that I'd consider a deft move considering our depth and current win now mode.
People are way to defensive about every move the flames make. As some have stated - its far more ludicrous to state he'll be the teams "number one center in two seasons".
I didn't jump in like resolute and start personally attacking though. I'd much rather discuss the move with someone who actually has a rational stance on the move and i really don't care which way they see it.

This forum took a bit of a nose dive after the Official Flames forum shut down for a while.
Then all the little kids and angry old men came to CP.
Hasn't been the same ever since, but I still love CP more than any other message board on the webtube.
