Here is something I have been wondering about this whole thing...Why would you go to the Pacific side of Mexico? Everyone knows the Caribbean side is where it's at.

I think in order to answer the question you need to give your version of "where it's at".

I have been to both sides and much prefer the Pacific side, especially around Santa Cruz/Hualtulco. The only reason I could see going to the Caribbean side is if you are going for nightlife, which I personally don't care about.

Whenever a foreigner is assaulted in Mexico, local authorities are usually quick to say "Hey, it wasn't one of our guys."
Like when that couple from Toronto were murdered a few years ago, the locals blamed a couple of random ladies from Thunder Bay.

The girl and I aren't even really social (in terms of meeting new people on vacation) and we met and drank with people a few times in Cuba at the resort. It just happens. Maybe they did that, he decided to turn in, and she stayed with the other people for an hour or so longer.
Again, not saying this is what I think happened, and I agree that the element of something seeming off about the whole situation is certainly there. Just speculating, trying to keep an open mind instead of just damning the husband. Hopefully we'll find out soon enough what happened, now that she's awake.

sorry this is off topic now, but really?
i dunno, maybe my idea of taking my wife to a resort is more carnal than others? i am not going to bed by myself because of a long flight, lol and a couple wobbly pops.
especially if my wife is also drinking, thats the time to g e t i t o n.
this has nothing to do with framing the husband as the attacker or not, just that i dont imagine some 30 something guy decided he was tired and went to bed without his wife on the first night of a Mexican vacation.

So what does this mean - Domestic Violence - Fellow vacationers?

Canadian on Canadian beat-downs. That's about as domestic as it gets for this case if the husband didn't do it.

From the Calgary Herald article:
Giles also questioned the appropriate translation of “domestic,” suggesting it can also be translated as “within a country” rather than family-related.

I thought that as well. Or "domestic" as within the resort it's self, and it not being from an outsider to that resort.

Ok, sure... but it's not like it's the only place in Mexico that has them. I'd rather go to some of the lower profile ruins and historical sites in Oaxaca or Chiapas that aren't overun by tourists. You can actually see them and don't have to be herded around.
Tulum is totally beautiful, but it's hard to enjoy when you have 10,000 other people getting in your way.

Given the new information ('domestic', husband questioned and released) I have this theory:
Supposedly she was off drinking while he slept (odd...). Perhaps she met a guy and they got friendly (drunk girl flirty friendly, not physically she's cheating friendly). He offers to walk her back to her room and makes a move. Drunk but still with some morals, she pushes away his advances.
The man, drunk, is more aggressive and things escalate. She says/does something that sets him off and the physical attack begins.
There's my theory.

I don't think there are any sites that come close to Chichen Itza elsewhere in Mexico, at least in terms of Mayan sites. I agree that the crowds are an issue, but any site of that magnitude is going to have that issue if it's fairly accessible.
My point is that there is plenty more to the Caribbean side of Mexico than the nightlife, and really the nightlife isn't all that crazy outside of Cancun AFAIK.

Nope, totally agree with you. Each time we go on vacation, my s/o knows vacations = vacation sex and lots of it. Strategically placed mirrors are one of my faves.

Either that or she stumbled onto some sort of situation which caused her to get beat up, maybe some sort of illegal activity.

Good point - wrong place wrong time can happen here or Mexico. However it seems odd that something like that could happen in a 5 star resort, hence I still lean towards my current theory... sunglasses off.
