The video was lagging behind the audio last night as my Bud Light red light was going off in the shootout before the goals on TV. Also as has been noted there's an issue with the RSN hockey feeds with crackle and pop noises in the rear surround channels. These are clearly RSN issues and not the providers.

Also amazing how they use no crowd noise. When I was watching an NBC game I could barely hear the announcers and it felt like you were actually at the game. The atmosphere and entertainment value increases tremendously when you can hear the crowd.

Syncing and crowd noise have been issues for years. They must be aware of it. Other feeds, with minuscule budgets are capable of not having drag and setting up a mic for crowd noise. The only possible explanation is that someone at Rogers is giving the game crew the orders to not improve service.

The rear speaker crackling must be certain cameras only?? I had never heard it on a Flames game only on Jays games previously. This was also the first time the sounds has been that badly off this year. There have been a couple instances where it was just off, almost not enough to notice, but last night was awful.
That being said, if you are superstitious, screw it, leave it as is
Yes this is the worst. It really stands out when someone hits the post. With so many last night it was very noticeable. My eyes see a player just winding up to shoot, my ears hear the ping from the post, and my mind says wtf? I'm also. It overly impressed with sportsnet's HD camera quality.

I really like Ball & Hrudey so it's the only reason I watch Flames broadcasts. If it wasn't for them, I'd watch the opposition broadcast most of the time.

The audio delay comes from the addition of virtual advertising on the Main Camera shot. The length of time it takes for this camera to go through the additional equipment needed to add the virtual graphics means the audio becomes out of sync.
I agree to that the Crowd effect mics ( commonmly called IS for International Sound) are quite low on Sportsnet Flames game. This could is probably a preference based on the production team there.
Most broadcasters in Canada right now are using stereo shows and then upconverting to a surround sound for distribution. So it could be in the that processing that the rear noise is added....

This was a problem LOOOOONG before they added virtual ads.
Here is a list of sports that are broadcast with virtual ads that don't have this problem:

All the sports.
not true my friend - and if you add the virtual add to only one camera vs adding them to the entire broadcast you set yourself up for problems. There are ways of adding virtual ads and adjusting the timing to make it work. It just seems that Sportsnet doesnt want to take the time to make it happen.

NBC is simply the best.
NBC HD is beautiful real HD. Blows SN out of the water. SN HD is barely better than SD. Not SD but definitely not HD.
Actually I remember watching a few Leaf games last year and the HD seemed pretty good so maybe just a problem for us?
I remember a few years back speculation was that Rogers had a delay on audio so that Kerr could keep up. It's been an issue since at least the days of Kerr doing pbp.
The only problem I have had lately with SNW games is a cracking noise coming out the rear speakers I don't get on any other channel.
To me, this is a much more annoying problem than any sync issue. I've noticed over the last two weeks that the sound has been crackling through my rear speakers. At first I thought it was my speakers or wiring but I noticed it was only happening during the Flames games so I realized it must be a SN problem.
Yeah, Kerr took over in 2011 and this thread started in 2011 so it's been going on into at least the 5th season now. I guess they just don't give a .......
The IS term for crowd noise isn't really used much in North America, at least not in domestic broadcast. It was a term coined during the Olympic broadcast, audio without a specific language. For hockey or is typically house, ice or fx.
The whole thing is bizarre. You don't typically add or mux (multiplexer) the audio and video until the very end. Most trucks for broadcast are pretty standard so it something the SN Flames broadcast do specifically, pretty sure we don't do it here in van. I honestly have no idea what they are screwing up here. I need to find out.

I may be wrong, but I don't think the Oilers' broadcasts have the issue, either.
