Xbox 360 noisy is about correct. The gateway can go anywhere I think. I have a buddy who had it installed in his utility room so it is out of the way. It doesn't have to be attached to a portal. My installer was lazy I guess.

Hmm, that makes sense. Didn't even think of that. For whatever reason I assumed it had to be out in the open so you could control with with a remote but it's the portals that talk to it, not a remote. So ya, putting it in a laundry room at the start of your coaxial line makes perfect sense.
I'll have him/her dump the gateway in the laundry room and build a shelf to mount it on down the road.

Join Shaw Friends and use their concierge service, both times I have used it I have had a resolution within 10 min.

I have the gateway in plain view, I haven't noticed any noise. It might be drowned out by the television volume, in which case the my Gateway is not that loud.
I too am disappointed with the bugs in this system. I am not a fan of when I am watching a recorded show with the guide open. I usually accidentally hit the playback functions instead of the arrow functions, and it turns into a cluster fata to get back to watching my program. I find that I stump the machine often, where it has to think.
I don't like the "prev" function is set 30 sec and the "forward" function can be set to 1min to 5 min intervals. I find that i sometimes over shoot the commercials by 2 min, and takes more to get back to the show.
For the most part I like it, 6 pvrs are used often, and that is awesome.

I have joined Shaw friends but haven't need to call them for anything.
The noise I think is more from the hard drive(s) reading and writing but I found it too noisy to be in our room.

Finally got the system installed yesterday. Guy had some issues getting one of the portals to see the gateway (not surprised, the wiring in my condo is junk) but finally got them all talking to the gateway. Had to run out the door after he finished installing so didn't have time to mess around with it until the evening. When I did, I found that 95% of our channels said we don't subscribe to them so had to wait on hold with Shaw for an hour but did get a VERY helpful CSR who sweet talked one of the Gateway techs to help me out without having to wait in their que. He updated all my firmware and at about 8PM, it was all finally working.
This system does have a few bugs, no doubt, but the potential of this system is impressive. Not a fan of the remotes that come with the box but switching over to Harmony remotes anyways. Why is there no "exit" button on the remotes that come with the system?
Overall I'm impressed with the system. Look forward to them tweaking it more and would certainly recommend to anyone considering it.

I believe the "live button" acts like an exit button.

The "Live" button can be a PITA, when you are watching a recording. I prefer to use the zoom button, it will allow you to close the OSPG and it won't interfere with your current program.

Did you try enabling it in your tv settings?

If the function of this Gateway doesn't improve soon, I will make a video of me running over my equipment and post it on Youtube. Almost at the end of my rope, with black screen "contact Shaw" messages. Trying to watch the Super Bowl and it is freezing and won't let me rewind...arrrrgh!

Did you get the "You do not subscribe" message last night too? All HD channels for me.
Shaw support couldn't fix it on their end, and told me the best fix is to power cycle the gateway. Did that and it worked.
Right after the 1st is when it started, pretty annoying, and bad timing, but the fix was easy enough.

It is such a PITA to power cycle my equipment in its current location. I thought I was done considering a power cycle when installing my A/V equipment, I guess not...

I haven't had much in the way of issues at all save the first day. I occasionally get the "lost connection to gateway" if I hit the fastforward buttons to quicky but it reconnects on it's own after a few seconds.
My experience so far has be a very postitive one. I do look forward to them adding more features though and maybe polishing up how it is currently.

I hear ya. They told me I could put the Gateway anywhere I wanted, so I moved it to the top shelf of my furnace room, with my router and NAS.
However, last night I had to break out the ladder, climb up and unhook. So I ended up plugging it into an outlet close to the floor.
Maybe run an extension cord to it from an easy to access outlet. As Shaw warranties their boxes for life, who cares if a power surge happens or whatever.
So next time, I'll unplug from there, but really this is only time it has happened since October.
I do agree, it is not polished yet, but I am getting happier with it each month. If they add DLNA that will be even sweeter.
Oh and on a unrelated note, those who signed up for Gateway in the early stages, may want to check out the new theme packs for TV. I was paying $55/mo for a bunch of themes from mid-last year ($10/each). They now added a "Choice Pack" for $35/mo. Basically the same, minus MTV pack, and AMD pack, but you get the news. Fair trade, as I can download the shows anyway, and save some cash in the process.

I am always searching for a good DLNA, I am using PS3 media server through the PS3, and when that is wonky I use Plex through my TV.
