Yeah you will enjoy it.
For equipment, ask around friends family that know.
This past weekend my son (16) & daughter (18) went to the used ski sale in Max Bell.
We dragged along buddy of hers, he was a provincial level skier. He provided excellent feedback and direction in what to buy based on our skiing styles.
If you don't know anyone, then at least hit up a good store.

Is there any good stores in Calgary? I was going to hit up Lou's next week but I see he is retired and closed. I'm headed to the city for work and the Kraken game so why not looks at some new gear too.

Ski Cellar, http://www.skicellarsnowboard.com/
Abominable, https://abominablesports.ca/ have a sale on now
That all I got, but I know there are tones of posters on here that will offer up other good options.
Set a budget.

The reason I might get back into it is because I am thinking about taking the kids (7 & 9) out to give skiing/snowboarding a try this winter. Neither skate or play hockey so thought the slopes might be a good winter hobby.
With all that out of the way, is there a good place to go for new equipment? I don't really want to go to the sportcheks of the world, I want a proper fitting of new gear for myself. Also would Nakiska be good for my kids to take their first lessons? Would a place like Canyon (Red Deer is closer to me) work just as well? Iv'e been out of the game for so long I'm not sure where to start with everything.

Spend your money on proper fitted boots from an actual ski store.
You can find tremendous value on skis on Kijiji; pretty sure Calgary ski swap just happened but Banff/Canmore may still be upcoming? Best of both worlds as you’ll get some advice as you buy

Spend your money on boots and the Kijiji or marketplace for skis. Decathalon for (extendable poles).
Your kids will grow out of new equipment so quickly. I’ve had great success on the second hand market for gear for the kids. Buying new, I wouldn’t recommend.
Ski cellar is a great spot, My wife got new boots last year, I’m still using the boots I bought at the start of university some 25 hrs ago, they were also from the ski cellar.

Ski Cellar has a junior trade in program that might work for you.
I have had nothing but great service when going to Ski Cellar.

I too have bought the majority of my ski gear at ski cellar. I guess my only complaint might be that they have yet to give me any kind of preferred customer status with some price discounts
At one time you could make an early morning appointment (before the shop opened) on weekends to get fitted up ahead of the crowds.

I always get our stuff at Ski Cellar. Sporting Life has decent ski stuff and has deals a lot of the time. Last night they hosted our ski club and so a bunch of the younger kids were getting fitted.

I just want to mention again that Sports Rent is doing a Tune up special of $45 for Skis/Snowboards until Oct. 31, regular $60.
Also, along with Junior seasonal ski rentals, we will be starting Adult Seasonal rentals Nov.1.
They are a basic front side carving ski, so nothing fancy, but for the most part, they'll get the job done if you're starting out or have bigger kids.

Spetch This is what you should do.
You should do this type of season long rental if you are getting back into it.

After my third knee surgery I'm skiing this year but do need to sell a bunch of skis due to my now more limited capabilities on the hill... including some very lightly used touring setups if anyone is interested - they're all longer sets, i.e. Black Diamond 188 carbon megawatts / 191 Dynafit Denalis, with bindings and with or without skins.

so today i had to call lake lousie as our passes have still not shown up.
as we ended the conversation i quickly asked her how many runs were opening tomorrow and she said 1 - wiwaxy. i was not palnning on going this weekend anyways, but i would sure have been annoyed to drive two hours to only have access to one run; however, that being said, i'd assume that this is somewhat typical of the first week or so.
last year we did not ski until later november and as i recall all the runs front and back were open

Pretty standard to only have the Wiwaxy 500 on opening unless it is a big snow fall.

Ya all the resorts are opening but it's still early season. Just be glad they're opening after that extended fall! Will still be a month or so before things start to get good though.

Question
Can storing your skis by the tips, hanging them, like this:
Have a detrimental effect on the skis?

It's *probably* ok but rockered skis will warp especially if they're soft at the tips. Up to you whether you're really worried about the small impact that might have or not.
I use this rack in the garage -- takes a bit more horizontal wallspace but works well

I have this exact same rack. Have used it for 3 years and haven't noticed any issues with any of the family's skis. 2 sets of rocker skis hang on it.
