Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says members of her caucus can sign whatever petitions they want to, including one pushing for a referendum on the province’s independence from Canada.
“I don’t police the responses of my MLAs, they can sign whatever petition that they want,” Smith told CTV Question Period host, Vassy Kapelos in an interview airing Sunday, adding she doesn’t know whether any of her caucus members have signed such a petition.
“But I would say that my approach, and the approach of our caucus as a united caucus, has been to support a sovereign Alberta within united Canada,” Smith added. “That means the federal government respects our areas of jurisdiction, just as we respect their areas of jurisdiction. I think we’re moving in the right direction on that, but not completely.”
WTF? You allow your own caucus, the one that votes on government business, to engage and support separatism, while you pretend that you lead a government supporting a united Canada? How are you united if you don't know what they are doing, and you are supposedly not ALL signing it? That's not unity, you dumbass. Do you know how stupid that makes you? ####ing stupid.
You look like an ineffectual leader who can't control her own members. It's either that, or you are lying to Albertans and are also a separatist. So stop being a a ##### little coward and come out and say it already.
You've got to be pretty ####ing brain dead to support this lot of liars.

She supports Danielle Smith. She will coast to victory in the referendum, whichever side wins, all the while taking no position in the name of direct democracy.
There’s an audio clip of Dennis Modry saying she told him “she won’t David Cameron herself”….i.e. won’t take a position that forces her to resign afterwards. Not a leader.
Surely if this has been happening for years your have multiple examples you can list here?
I can think of one recent example that led to lawsuits and the company settling for a large pay out.
I guess I'll spoiler it...
This is just some of the stuff we know about, probably more we don't.
Spoiler!
It was a bit different, but there was the whole Redwater thing.
Quote:
After Redwater became insolvent in 2015, its bankruptcy trustee wanted to sell the firm's valuable wells to repay debt to its bankers and walk away from the non-producing wells — leaving them to Alberta's Orphan Well Association (OWA) to cleanup. The OWA is funded by the energy industry.
There's this one:
Quote:
When the oil and gas company Manitok Energy went out of business in 2018, it sent tens of millions of dollars worth of environmental liabilities to the Orphan Well Association or OWA, the non-profit agency responsible for cleaning up the environmental messes left behind by bankrupt oil and gas companies. But less than a year later, a new company with a different name but the same CEO was able to acquire all of Manitok's remaining non-orphan well assets--while dumping the liabilities on the rest of us--and all with the tacit blessing of the Alberta Energy Regulator or AER
hris Campmans was “blindsided” to learn that an old well site on his land near Picture Butte, Alta., could soon be transferred from one insolvent Calgary oil and gas company to another. The dairy farmer thought the well had long been cleaned up and remediated — in fact, he grows feed for his cattle where the well used to be.
Quote:
But the deal between Bellatrix and the numbered company also raises concerns about a murky practice in the corners of the oilpatch. Companies have been using the bankruptcy process to separate their profitable assets from their unprofitable ones, dumping the old and unwanted wells in a shell company bound for bankruptcy, which more often than not causes the wells to end up in the care of the Orphan Well Association (OWA).
The Orphan Well Association has assumed control of Revitalize Energy Inc.'s operations, weeks after the Calgary-based company was formally ordered by the Alberta Energy Regulator to suspend operations.
Due to the company's ongoing financial distress and failure to comply with a string of previous orders, the regulator has ruled the operator can not be relied on to safely maintain its wells.
This may be a bit different, but it's pretty odd a startup from 2106 who's intention was to "As a junior exploration & production (E&P) company, our primary target market is the acquisition and revitalization of distressed or orphaned wells. With this responsibility, we also conduct the environmental remediation of each site and related contaminated locations." https://www.datanyze.com/companies/r...ergy/411611632
Now, I'd love to have seen the business plan for this one. Sure sounds fishy. End result is the same, though.
And then there is Forent and W. Brett Wilson...
Quote:
When Forent Energy, a floundering oil and gas company, and its former chairman and its single largest shareholder, minor Calgary celebrity W. Brett Wilson, were given an environmental protection order from the Alberta Energy Regulator, they didn’t clean up their mess—instead Wilson dumped 16 wells on the Orphan Well Association, leaving millions of dollars of liabilities to the public to pick up for him.
...By the time of its final receivership report in September 2020, Forent owed the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) $1.1 million for cleanup deposits in addition to over $6.6 million in debt to ATB, and another $44,000 in unpaid property taxes to nine municipalities. And that’s all on top of somewhere between $2.1 and $3.7 million in liabilities, largely in the form of orphan wells, that Forent and Wilson dumped on the public.
Quote:
By August 2016, when Forent was approaching insolvency, it sold Perisson the rights to acquire oil and gas assets for five wells in Ribstone, Alta., and two wells in Success, Sask., where Forent had halted production due to low energy prices.
“That close to failure, they’re in the zone of bankruptcy and that is no-no land,” Regan Boychuk of the Alberta Liabilities Disclosure Project told the Progress Report. “That’s money that isn’t going to go to the bank that lended them the money and it’s not going to clean up the wells they left behind.”
At this point, Forent had only $692,000, which ATB and the AER agreed to divide among themselves, while the municipalities remained on the hook for the company’s unpaid property taxes.
AER spokesperson Tanya Zelinsky says the terms of their agreement are confidential, but did note that “Forent’s insolvency took place before the Supreme Court of Canada’s [2019] Redwater decision, which ruled environmental obligations must be fulfilled before creditors are repaid in insolvencies.”
Quote:
At the time it entered receivership in May 2017, Forent had licences for 84 wells, 8 facilities, and 24 pipeline segments.
Now there remain 31 inactive wells, 25 of which require closure. Of those, 16 were sent to the OWA for decommissioning and reclamation, according to the AER. As of March 2021, the OWA says seven of these wells remain orphaned, while nine sites await reclamation. You can see a map of Forent's orphan wells here.
I’m really excited to watch the mental gymnastics of these leavers during these next two weeks when for sure they will be cheering on Canada at the Olympics. It will be most noticeable if the Canadians go onto be in the Gold medal games in Hockey.
This guy is ####ing insane. Worse, I can see how morons would find his arguments extremely compelling, even if though they contain more tonnes of horse #### than the Stampede produces every year.

Of all the chuds that Alberta has produced over the years, this guy is maybe the most embarrassing. There is a lot of silly in that video, and it isn't Vassy's questions.
What is terrifying is that people like this actually have a platform and voice in this province to begin with but Berta is going to Berta as we all know. This guy is an absolute lunatic and a complete idiot to boot, and you have people treating his words as gospel within certain segments of the population.
I can only imagine what kind of hellhole they would create here if they ever were successful. Him and his cronies are certainly traitors for even pushing this agenda this far, but conspiring with a hostile US government is just too much.

The more this idiot talks, the more he looks like a complete lunatic and an absolute buffoon. That roughly 20% of the population believes any of this nonsense is a really bad look for Alberta. It’s beyond embarrassing, shameful, and just plain stupid.

Rath argued at the SCC 20 years ago. And he's since been fired by that client (and sued over his contingency agreement). And that's not the only time recently that his fees have been challenged by his FN clients.

This is the guy leading this movement? Utterly embarrassing. He comes across like a frothing at the mouth conspiracy nut with a proposal written in crayon, some of which he lodged up his nose.

Incredible! Him doing this interview, in my opinion, is fantastic simply for exposing the lunacy behind this movement on a national and potentially international level. I'm sure there are a few "separatist" Albertans that will watch this and go, "Yikes!".
Quite embarrassing for the Albertan government to not immediately denounce this.
I fail to see how signing a separatist potion is not in breach of their oath of office.
Quote:
Oath of allegiance
1(1) When by a statute of Alberta a person is required to take an oath of allegiance it shall be taken in the following form:
I, , swear that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to His Majesty King Charles the Third, His heirs and successors, according to law.
So help me God.
