It was funny, I was engaging a Oilers fan on Twitter when Matheson came out and talked about how deep the Oilers are, deep run blah blah blah.
I went back with the bad blueline, bad slow bottom 6 and poor goaltending, bad 5v5 numbers last year and if the pp drops playoffs are unlikley.
And Oiler fan came back with the Blueline is great, Barrie is the best bottom pairing defenseman in the league. The bottom 6 is very good and Koskinen is a top goalie.
Koskinen is at best the 4th best in the Canadian division behind the Flame, Jets and Habs. And I doubt he's fourth. Part of me feels bad about the crushing emotions that Oiler fans and people like Staples are going to feel this year, because I believe its going to be bad and in the end there will be a panic firing of Tippet halfway through the year.
But part of me is I want to see that devastation.

The problem is I think this forum underestimates Staples.
Staples to me isn't some die hard oiler fan crushed each year the oilers loose. In my best estimate:
Staples is a Rudy Giuliani. Rudy takes a crushing fair election and spins it to enrich himself (i.e. https://rudygiulianics.com/). Rudy predicts Trump will win the election by large margins and then when they loose, he makes the election sound "rigged" and unfair after previously predicting. He doesn't believe in this, he is enriching himself with messaging.
Staples follows the same playbook, duping oil fans as Rudy dupes MEGA supporters. Year after year Staples writes how the Oilers are a powerhouse at the start of the year, and then when the year ends, writes about how this or that didn't go their way but did for other teams so that's why the oilers lost. He hardly (or never) looks at the systemic problems the oilers have, but finds excuses for the fan base to buy.
Staples knows his role to make money in life is the same as Rudy is currently - lie to your fanbase and have them comeback to you to find the answers of whom to blame on crushing defeats. I am not hockey writer, so to avoid a slander issue, I will say this is my uneducated view of his columns from reading what is posted here, which may not give him a fair shake.
In short, in my view, Staples is the Edmonton version of Rudy. He knows better, and isn't devastated when the oilers loose- in fact, I would bet he is gleeful about future income.

If you're going to bring that to your stats prof, I would suggest bringing a med kit as well

Haha, is that for this year or any of the previous 5 years? Because I'm pretty sure they've been saying the same thing ever since drafting Mcavi...

There is some information to be garnered from that though. Ignoring the hometown voters and focusing on the rest, you have the following:
1) Calgary, 9.4% (37%)
2) Toronto, 8.6% (34%)
3) The field, 7.4% (29%)
There is probably a Calgary bias in that, but interesting

He also claims the Oilers current defense is the best since the 2008 Oilers. Who knows, maybe that's true. lol

Do Oilers fans consider that 2008 defence group to be some sort of a benchmark?

Oiler fans have been subject to a steady feed of propaganda, not unlike Trump supporters. I fear that they honestly believe this is their year to win the cup, and when they don't, then will take up arms and storm the NHL offices so they can award themselves the Stanley Cup they believe is theirs and theirs alone.

The 07/08 Oilers were 9th in the conference, gave up second most goals in the conference, and 5th most goals overall.
Or do they mean the 08/09 team tgat was 11th in the conference, 12th in the conference in goals against?

Yeah, it's too small. I saw this tweet from Salim Velji this morning:
https://twitter.com/user/status/1348866782476476417
I immediately jumped on google because I thought it was pretty cool idea, but it turns out it's just a small logo on the backplate:
https://twitter.com/user/status/1348739896429727744
To be clear, a small tribute is better than no tribute, so props to Smith on the gesture. But since E=NG, I'd say it could have been done better, and perhaps on a more prominent part of his mask.

Here are the Dmen on the 2008 team for reference:
Taylor Chorney
Tom Gilbert
Dennis Grebeshkov
Theo Peckham
Ladislav Smid
Steve Staios
Sheldon Souray
Lubomir Visnovsky
Jason Strudwick
![Blink](images/calpuck/smilies/blink.gif) honestly seems worse than the current group (somehow) to me.
