If the worst thing that happens to Andy Greschner is that he loses a potential job reference and people close to him are a bit disappointed, then, in my opinion, he's gotten off very lightly. I think that a bit of naming and shaming is far less problematic for him then a six month custodial sentence.

He said something stupid, insensitive and worst of all for him under his own name, nothing he said was illegal. I think that the reaction of this message board is pretty sad in a lot of ways as well in that people are actively attempting to ruin someone's life now and into the future.

Some idiot no one cares about made a spectacle of himself to his idiot friends that no one cares about.
Unable to vent their emotions about the flooding at the actual flood and devoid of some much needed comic relief, the masses turned on the aforementioned idiot and his spectacle-inducing comments. A company loosely associated with the idiot in question was put in the position to ask him to remove any evidence of their association so as not to get swept up in the 'flood' (levity is key) of emotion directed at him and his stupid comments.
With some quick and effective PR, the company was able to get to high ground and avoid the raging torrent. Andy Greshner, however, doesn't appear to be so lucky. Rather than evacuate an apology, he's indignantly sticking to his philosophical location, probably because, "I didn't get in trouble during the 2005 floods."
Someone is going to have to stick their neck out at some point in the future to rescue this guy.

So tell me, your honour, what is an apt punishment for speaking against Albertans? We have sabotaged his prospects for future employment and we have obliterated his reputation. Are we on this until he kills himself? Fill me in, I don't get the plan.

Freedom of speech does not imply freedom of consequences from that speech. He chose to be offensive and ignorant, and those offended by him reacted. Cause, effect.

He sabotaged his prospects for future employment by not only making the stupid comments but by posting them online. Nobody here has said they are calling anyone to tell them not to hire him at most people are just making companies aware of what he said. Considering that many companies now do social media and google searches on prospective employees it was quite possible that it would have come out anyways. Nobody here is doing anything wrong and the only one who deserves any blame is Andy Greschner himself.

While I think a lot of this is over the top, and surprised there are still posts about it when I woke up this AM, he did all of that himself.
Lets get back to what this thread is about.

I know that these sorts of legal "questions" differ between countries, but here in Britain, thanks to the wonderfully paranoid European Court of Justice, comments such as the one he made could be considered incitement to hatred which is punishable under British (European) law.
The whole point of this for me is to have people think a little bit more critically about what they write, post, print, etc. This is a different world in which we live and comments that one makes in the public domain now have permanence somewhere in the ether.
Hopefully this guy will try to engage his brain before he engages his keyboard, which is good advice for anyone with an active online presence.

I understand that his comments were crass and offensive and made him look like a total dick in every respect possible but at the same time, I wonder if the effect was proportional to the cause. The guys words were offensive to many (myself included) I agree but there was nothing behind them, it was an impotent rage at the void - people going out of their way to sabotage any future career on the other hand seems needlessly cruel to me.

I can't help but laugh at a guy working in the forestry industry claiming the moral high ground on environmental destruction.
