No one is doing that, I don't think anyone is claiming he will be as good as Joe Thornton just using him as an example albeit a more extreme one. The hype is warranted, he has all the tools to be a terrific player for this team for a very long time. Don't get mad about people being excited about that, this is sports and we are fans. What do you expect?

Yes but this team let Lazar play a playoff game. He had 4 pts in 13 AHL games but saw more time than Janko. It was a big mistake and we could've used his size vs a team that constantly physically outmatches us.

The old joke goes a player says to the coach, "Joe got hit so hard he doesn't know what his name is". The coach says "tell him he's Wayne Gretzky".

At the moment, behind Gaudreau, Monahan, Backlund, Bennett for sure. And maybe Ferland, Versteeg, Frolik, and Brouwer. Simply based on his lack of proof of NHL scoring (for obvious reasons) and the NHL level offensive skill shown by those guys within the last, say, three years.

That's off topic (Jankowski derails are fair game). But I'll throw you a PM with my thoughts.

No. Joe Thornton thinks he's Mark Jankowski.

Well I was referring to the time spent thinking about him, but sure that also applies

Yes, I agree it's difficult because Jankowski hasn't played significant NHL games but I was obviously looking for opinion based on skillset seen through preseason.
Plus doing the entire forward group might be cumbersome.
I think the most skilled rank as follows:
1.Gaudreau
2.Tkachuk
3.Monahan
4.Bennett
5.Backlund
and then I kind of think Jankowski but I feel he might be higher. Versteeg is extremely skilled too.
Putting up points is an obvious marker for skill but some guys have trouble getting their skill in the game despite having gifts. (I think Button talked about this with draft picks).
Another guy like that is/was Ferland. You could see his ability but it wasn't showing on scoresheet.
Clearly Jankowski has to actualize his potential but it's fun to imagine.

So if the Flames sign Jagr, does Stajan go to the pens?

EDIT: I might have Bennett higher but it's kind of "which of your kids do you like the most " syndrome. Lol.

I see Jankowski as more in the style of Eric Staal. I don't get the Thornton comparisons beyond height/reach.

It does feel like Flames have a deal brewing. Lots of surplus, for picks maybe?

I wonder if the Vegas Golden Knights would want to trade one of their many #6 dmen for Curtis Lazar.
Lazar has some value, and he might still be good enough for a spot on the Knights.

Some notable news today outside of Pickard, probably already mentioned elsewhere:
Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
No guarantee it's imminent by any means, but keep an eye on VGK as expansion team is in trade mode. May move a goalie (Pickard?) and a D.
VGK expected to hold onto vet D Engelland, Garrison, Sbisa and won't part with kids Theodore, Schmidt and C Miller but any other D possible.
VGK needs to tidy up its roster to make room for Theodore, who only got sent down because he didn't require waivers. He should be in NHL.
Elliotte Friedman @FridgeHHNIC
Marincin & Pickard on waivers
Two interesting names to replace Bartkowski as #6 on the left side, giving Calgary 3 useful defence pairings instead of two.
Brayden McNabb, from Vegas, would be awesome. 26-year-old, 6'4, 210, left-shooting defensive defenceman who likes taking the body and isn't afraid of the rough stuff. He isn't the quickest but is a decent penalty killer while also being a competent puck-mover - a guy you rarely notice on TV but who stands out when watching in person. Good analytics when deployed in a depth role.
Martin Marincin, from Toronto, is also intriguing. 25-year-old, 6'5, 210, left-shooting defensive defenceman whose combination of a giant reach and terrific gap control really makes it tough on the opposition when it comes to exiting their own zone and in transition through the neutral zone. Unfortunately he is a poor skater so has trouble recovering when his reach+gap don't work. He is also prone to Wideman-style catastrophic mistakes from time-to-time, which sticks with many fans as opposed to "boring" tendencies like textbook gap control, but his analytics have been good in depth despite playing on terrible teams.
McNabb is more expensive at 1.7 vs 1.25, and both expire at season's end - McNabb being UFA while Marincin will be RFA. No question both are an upgrade on Bartkowski.
