Agreed.

The spread for Costco vs other stations on Gasbuddy right now is about 16 cents. I think that difference is usually pretty close with a maximum difference of maybe 20 cents a litre and most aren't waiting for the fuel light to be on to fill up.

A 40 litre tank would be like $6-8 difference at 16-20 cents.
A 60-70 litre tank would be like $9-14.
Average person probably fills up maybe 2-3x a month so a savings of around $20-50 a month per vehicle? Double that for a pick up truck.

You'd need a membership to fill up at Costco and deal with the stupid lines. Costco are also usually kind of out of the way travel wise from someone's home and the idling times are monstrous vs other stations. I think that the real world savings are likely slightly less than the raw calculations above by a smidge.

It's a decent savings, but nothing that is worth the level of disagreements I've occasionally heard about filling up at the best price. Some people mention the ballpark calculation of savings is basically nothing when I tell them how to calculate the yearly savings.

I'm not picking on you Dion, but this makes me think. Generally speaking people seem to fall in this camp when it comes to fuel prices. When all the stations are selling for the same price everyone is upset because it's evidence of collusion, where is the competition. When stations have varying prices that's not competition, it's evidence of price gouging. People want to have it both ways.

Who doesnt just go to Costco at 8 am when it opens and no one is there?

Fill up gas? 5 mins no line

Walk inside - Nobody.

Get to checkout - They are waiting for you

I "think" you need to spend the extra $60 for the executive membership so go the hour early (extra 1% back so $6K a year breakeven) but it is glorious

Why anyone would go at any other time floors me. Do people not get up before 8 on weekends?

lol, yeah, no I don't get up before 8am on a weekend. Love that you're floored by that. Somebody kill me if I start planning my weekend wake up time around a trip to the fricken grocery store. I go whenever I want, grab my stuff and wait in line for five minutes. It's NBD.

I'm pretty sure the Costco percentage reward doesn't apply to gas and pharmacy.
