Agreed.
The spread for Costco vs other stations on Gasbuddy right now is about 16 cents. I think that difference is usually pretty close with a maximum difference of maybe 20 cents a litre and most aren't waiting for the fuel light to be on to fill up.
A 40 litre tank would be like $6-8 difference at 16-20 cents.
A 60-70 litre tank would be like $9-14.
Average person probably fills up maybe 2-3x a month so a savings of around $20-50 a month per vehicle? Double that for a pick up truck.
You'd need a membership to fill up at Costco and deal with the stupid lines. Costco are also usually kind of out of the way travel wise from someone's home and the idling times are monstrous vs other stations. I think that the real world savings are likely slightly less than the raw calculations above by a smidge.
It's a decent savings, but nothing that is worth the level of disagreements I've occasionally heard about filling up at the best price. Some people mention the ballpark calculation of savings is basically nothing when I tell them how to calculate the yearly savings.
