Also to echo an earlier poster, people like his intangibles... he's a young guy who is a captain already, has good character, is Canadian.
Lindholm has already been scoring in the top league in Sweden against fairly talented men whereas Monahan is playing against 16-20 year olds but the perception because he is a smaller Swede who puts up numbers is that he may be more boom or bust. I think that's unfounded. When you read articles about him his work ethic and his leadership are talked up big time, also he's 6 feet tall so there's no size issue to me. link
I'd be happy with either but think you give the edge to Lindholm based on his resume. Clutch and grab has gone way down in the last ten years and being 6'2" over 6'0" is valuable but overrated, especially in your skilled players. Go with the higher upside.
|
So being Canadian, all of a sudden, is a great intangible? Are we superhuman or something?
Did you not witness Canada's best prospects getting embarrassed at the most recent WJC?
We, as Canadians, need to get off our high horse, because pretty soon the rest of the world is going to bypass us in Hockey as well. The only reason we are good at Hockey is because nobody else gives a damn about the sport to be better at it than we are.

He's not saying one of his intangibles is that he's a Canadian.

Yup 8 out of the top 12 scorers, I can see us being bypassed any day now.
Seriously having pride in our country, what we excel in and our fellow nationals shouldn't be noted as a negative. I prefer homegrown talent and don't see a problem with it

Definitely not in agreement with Canadian inherent superiority myself just to be clear. Russian culture shock and contractual headaches are a legit concern in my opinion but Swede vs. Canadian - take the best player every time. While recognizing that the draft is guesswork I think Lindholm is the better player at this point - Flames scouting will have a more thorough understanding than me though.
I am really hoping today that at least one of the teams below us wins so we move up into 5th (before the lottery) which even if we miss the top 4 players will give management the ability to take who they think is the best out of the Lindholm/Nikushkin/Nurse/Monahan group not pick from the best of who's left.
Maybe Tampa even consider Nurse and one of the top 3 forwards slides to us or we can swap picks. Tampa already knows how to score, they need D.

So basically those of us hoping for a center its....
Mackinnon > Barkov > Lindholm > Monahan
Or at least that's what I'm getting from here and most scouting reports. I'm asking not telling, so is that about right?

That would be my preference list. I want us to get a center badly, but if somehow we got 4, and Drouin fell to 4, I wouldn't be upset if we took him

Yup, for me anyways. MacKinnon's my dream, if we win the lottery and take him I'll be ecstatic. However any one of Barkov, Lindholm, or Monahan will instantly become our best center prospect in 20 years.

I'm being irrational but Barkov scares me by virtue that I don't want him to be Olli Jokinen 2.0.

Thanks guys, I don't have a lot of time to follow the draft eligible players. So most of what I go by is from reading on here and the odd google search on stats.
All of the info is much appreciated.

If Drouin got to four and the Flames got to four as well, they'd have to take him but then they're going to have to figure out a way to get Wennberg or Horvat or Compher.

An Olli Jokinen with actual hockey IQ and poise would be a great player.

I'm not convinced there's a huge difference between some of these guys. And if there is I don't have the information that proves it.
MacKinnon is tops for me. After that I think the other 3 are almost too close to call. Hopefully the Flames get their choice of several of the centres.
I'd be happy with any of Barkov, Lindholm, Monahan or Nurse if that is the player the Flames are highest on.

Carolina needs to score 4 goals or just win/OTL Vs Pitts and that moves us up in the draft.
Nash, need them to win their last game.
Need Tampa to win too.
If these 3 things happen, we sit as a top 3 pick before the lottery.

Nope. Tampa cannot pass us. We can pick 4th at best pre-lottery.
One less win and we could've drafted 2nd if the games tonight went the right way.

Ya that's my list for centres too. If Drouin or Jones slip or we win the lottery I guess the picture changes.
Will be a fun 1st round. Even some of the later 1st round picks are going to bring real good players... great year to have 3 picks. I'd love to see them grab one of those top centres and add Gauthier with a later 1st if he's still there. Between those 2 picks and Jankowski in 1 calendar year you became one of the deepest teams in centre prospects in the league.

Carolina needs a win, they have the ROW tiebreaker, or get 1 point in OT.
Nash could do us a big favor playing spoiler against the jackets.
We can't pass (Drop below) tampa. We hold every tiebreaker (specifically their ROW can't possibly end up higher than ours).

Ollie Jokinen at his peak was a pretty formidable power forward. Adding a hockey IQ that is better than average would have certainly helped maintain that.

Is that how it works? I thought we were ahead of Carolina because we have a worse goal differential?

People keep forgetting that Olli Jokinen was a damn good hockey player.
If that is what we get in Barkov...I'm perfectly happy with it. A first line big body center.
