Agreed. I would add that opinion is always against funding in the abstract. But when the shiny new building goes up, there will be excitement and support. Nenshi knows this stuff, so he takes that into account as well.

Can't all the p!$$ing and moaning about unfair use of tax dollars go in a different thread (possible GMG) rather than clogging up this thread which is supposed to be about new arena plans? Yes, not all your tax dollars go to causes you believe in. Big freakin surprise. Get over it. It's not going to change. I'd rather sit in a new arena than pay for your kids education. Life isn't always fair.

Those companies are more valuable than the Flames to Calgary without question, not even close. The Flames bring you entertainment and as such are no different than a movie theatre. We only have to look back to the last NHL lockout and the missing season to see that life does go on without hockey in the city. As a fan, I was devastated when the lockout happened and as it dragged on. I couldn't imagine a winter without watching the various games and going to the Dome or to the pub with buddies on game night. But the pain was actually very slight and it was surprisingly easy to forget about the lack of NHL action.

To answer your question. Yes he should remove the jersey if he is not going to vote in favor of the Flames. It is absolutely hypocritical, you can't see that.
Nenshi has already said in the past he is not in favor of providing funding to any privately owned professional sports franchise.
He has also said in the past that not 1 concert has bypassed Calgary due to the Saddle Dome.
Fwy don't bother asking for proof of a quote you know he has said this and not just once.

Good lord this is ridiculous. I am vehemently opposed to the city providing a nickel to the Flames for a new arena. There is so much documentation that the net benefit is zero for the city.
I would support the city providing land if the Flames remediate (say the West Village) and the city gets a percentage of concession sales, there are public facilities included in the building (ice/field space) as part of a sport and entertainment facility. I would even support the city paying for a portion new rinks and fields that are a part of this idea where they are available for public use.

I honestly didn't know there were people who hated Nenshi because he wasn't spending enough.
I'm all for big spending and the city helping in small ways to get the arena done. At the end of the day though, if my tax money is going somewhere more crucial than an arena, that's all good.
Make no mistake, it's going to get done. It's going to be downtown. It's going to be a big part of the city. But complaining because Nenshi won't throw money at it? Saying he isn't really a Flames fan because he isn't willing to blow the budget on a privately owned arena? I'd revise your understanding of "hypocritical."

Can we keep this thread on track please? This is about announcements, not discussion over taxation, LRT and if Nenshi hates the Flames.

If you check the thread title, you will clearly see it labeled as the 'Armchair Civic Politics and Political Theory Thread'. If you want news about the arena, you should make your own thread.

Besides we all know Nenshi hates the Stampeders most of all.
I remember him during the 2010 election campaign. He tried to copy Barb Higgins by getting the team to bring him onto the field so the fans could get a shot of him cheering on the Stamps.
Unlike Higgins who stayed and cheered for the game, Nenshi immediately left the building before the game even started!

He is a phony with a smile.
And to those that have umbrage with my previous comment. I didn't say Nenshi should "blow the bank".
But the city will be expected to kick in some portion.
Just like other cities in Canada and the US have and will continue to co exist with their pro franchises.
Huskey Cenovous CNRL or any other O&G company are not comparable. And if you don't think that the Flames and the Stamps are not long time images of Calgary then honestly some of you are a sports fan i definitely can not relate to.
The Dome and McMahon are used for a number of events. Debating that they do not is foolish. But go ahead.
Nenshi has already said he will "does not support any kind of funding to the Flames or Stamps on this subject"
Any future change of his mind is back peddling. Like i said Nenshi will vote against any $ amount the Flames Stamps seek.
You will see

Why so mad? Did Nenshi cut you off in traffic?
If Nenshi ends up voting for funding, after previously opposing it [U]might[U] be hypocritical. Unless of course he changes his mind after being persuaded or coming to understand different facts.
Also, by saying he is not a fan and should not wear a Flames jersey while opposing public funding for an arena, you are basically saying the same about half the posters on this thread (not me thank goodness).

I'd rather the city fix Crowchild then to help with the arena. But I do believe that there will be some common ground if it ends up being as big as its being suggested, just not funding on the arena itself.

Also used transit in Seattle, San Francisco, Toronto and Amsterdam and they all have a much smoother transit experience than Calgary does. Outside Montreal and Toronto they all have direct commuter access to the airport via train, a major plus. Part of it is they all invested a lot in transit early on, whereas Calgary is doing heavy investing now when the network is more difficult to integrate with the city.
That's why things like the North-Central/SE line has to be built ASAP or it'll be more difficult and costly as the areas where the line could be built become more populated and built in. People talk about an arena and how it relates to a "world class city", but all the cities I listed for great transit are considered or close to being considered world class cities and they all have excellent transit. I think excellent transit is a much better indicator of a world class city than an arena, otherwise Edmonton will be considered more world class in a few years just by erecting a building, which is preposterous.
|
Fair enough, didn't have enough personal experience to comment myself, but statistics did not seem to support an anecdotal evidence.
I do agree with you that public transit in general needs to be more central to our transportation needs, easier and more comfortable to use. But I have always doubted that is a Calgary issue, and always assumed that was a North America issue.

It is hardly the same thing are they the mayor or Alderman that have a vote. That can control the outcome no they are not.
Maybe people.should remind themselves the funding that was kicked in to build the Dome it came from the Flames, Provincial and Civic Government.
Nenshi has already stated he is opposed to "any" funding.

He's the Mayor. I'm sure he has a list ten pages long of things he'd rather spend $150 million on than a new arena/football stadium. Does that mean it won't ever get done? No. But it does mean that our Mayor isn't gung ho to spend public money for the hobby of some local billionaires.
And that's a good thing.

I'd buy tickets to watch that team play. Especially if they were owned by the Flames.
