December 22: Zelenskyy asks Freeland to take on the role of Economic Development Advisor.
December 27: PM Carney announces an additional $2.5B in aid commitment to Ukraine.

Yes Freeland, who has been an outspoken supporter of Ukraine through this whole war, waited until Zelensky bribed her to lean on the Prime Minister who beat her and backbenched her to provide an extension to aide Canada was already providing. That seems likely.
As others have mentioned, given the level of support most NATO countries have offered Ukraine, the probably do have a role to play in guiding their economic development. It makes sense for Canada as a country to be represented in some fashion.

If they are receiving and using our money, why wouldn't we want to weigh in on how they use it?
This could be a positive where Freeland is representing Canada to ensure the money we are sending is well used. And, giving her a bigger title could simply mean that they really appreciate the help they are getting from Canada.
Why do we have to turn "helping a country that is under constant attack from Russia" into a negative?

I'm kind of on the opposite end.
Why would we think we would know best how they should use it? We're not there.
If you're going to help a friend in need...do you do so only with strings attached?

If your friend is literally busy fighting a war, sending an expert to help use the money in the most effective way possible can be a part of the support.

Aid commitment to rebuilding a war torn country is not the same as lending money to a friend...
Billions of taxpayer dollars are flowing to a foreign state. There's a responsibility there to ensure the money is going to actually be used for rebuilding.

But my understanding is that its not for 'rebuilding.' That usually happens after the war is won and done. This is for Humanitarian and Military Aid?
Buying guns, medical supplies and food, that kind of thing?

From the little I've heard, zelenskky wants to guard the economic viability of the country not near the front lines. He doesn't want Ukraine to fall into economic ruin that needs to be rebuilt from the ground up.
Thats probably why the Amerricans are so wishy washy about everything. They love swooping in for pennies on the dollar.

Sounds like she’s stepping down as the MP in short order.
Should have happened before she took on the new role.
The potential for a conflict could still exist: influence on legislative decisions and use of office resources, to name a few.

It feels like you are looking for a problem where there isn't one. It is not like she's trying to get government contracts for MHCare.

I’m not looking for a problem. There is a problem.
It’s a conflict of interest. And she should have resigned prior to taking on the position.
There seems to be no transparency anymore. It’s really starting to irk me. And we just let our government officials off the hook.

You went from your opinion is there is a conflict, to it could be a conflict, to it is a factual conflict.
This kinda feels like you just want to be upset without really understanding why.

I also feel there would be a potential for conflict of interest here. She's a member of the Canadian government and would reasonably have knowledge of Canadian plans that would benefit Ukraine that other countries wouldn't be aware of. But she is stepping down from her position as MP so there won't be an issue and is why she's leaving her role.

She was already planning on leaving...
On Nov 19, 2025, the Rhodes Trust officially announced that Chrystia Freeland has been appointed as its next Warden and CEO. She is scheduled to begin her tenure on July 1, 2026. She will relocate to Oxford, England, where the Rhodes Trust is based at the University of Oxford.
