That's when you get to go sit in a room, and a union guy comes and talks to you, then the big boys come and interview you, and you get the rest of the day off with pay. At least, that's how our guys do it...
Lufthansa does not mess around with their long haul ops. What a lineup, and a beautiful terminal.
Spoiler!
Man that is one nice looking lineup. It's honestly too bad we can't have that in Canada. I mean, i understand that we just don't have the population density to warrant such a fleet of airplanes, but at least a nice terminal like frankfurt with a row of AC 777s would be good!
They're either -800's or -900's with the double overwing exit... I guess there's a slim chance one of them could have been destined for WestJet, as they'll take 3 more -800's this year.
So is this considered a train wreck or a plane crash?

The hammerhead pier at YYZ's terminal is fairly new and has as strong lineup of 77W's on any given day. It's not FRA, but it's pretty good.

Those 737 fuselages are going to be a total loss...check out the one in the foreground. It's completely ripped apart!!
Hey now, if they could fix this:
Why not that one?
Seriously though, it is probably fixable but Boeing may opt to not do it. The customer that frame was/is for may not be keen to take it either (unless they get a real nice discount on it).
The timeline seems too ambitious for new 787's or A350's, then again A350 might be too large so possibly the A330. So if they're going new they'll likely be going with A330 or 777. Although I doubt they'd receive 777's within the launch time either (or A330 for that matter).
Looking used, 767, or 777 depending on what size fleet they want. I'd imagine they'd be looking moreso at the smaller widebodies 767 or A330.
Then it comes down to purchase price and what they'd prefer. I could see WestJet buying used to start, but ordering new and phasing out the used once they have an entire fleet of new aircraft. Which would eliminate the 787/A350. Also by that logic it would eliminate the 767 as they are no longer in production.
Perhaps the best widebody out there for WestJet is the A330?
Mind you this is mostly be tying and thinking at the same time...

With the relationship that Westjet has with Boeing I would think it almost an impossibility for them to go to Airbus. With going to wide body aircraft they could be looking at getting pricing deals on them or future purchases of the 737's like what Air Canada got.
Rumor is that the available 767s are quite old and would need lots of $$ put into them. So I think it'll be A330s or the overweight 787s as a stop gap til new 787/A350 can be acquired.
Some have even mentioned 777s but that seems overly large for what we'd use them for.
I think the overweight 787's are a very good option. No issue using them with the first routes mentioned of YYC/YEG-Hawaii, and then start getting new build ones from Boeing and simply replace them or perhaps they get such a deal on them they find a spot in the fleet longer term.
From what I've heard, there's pretty much zero chance it's anything other than the 767. Perhaps things have changed, but until I hear otherwise I'm sticking with that.
Saw my first dual approach from the office window today - pretty odd seeing a second plane that close behind the first, but very cool once I realized what was happening.

Well if the planes were used they wouldn't be going directly to Airbus.
Even if they were new, these days, you go where you'll get the best deal. Airbus and American Airlines went to war after the crash of AA 587, yet here we are with AA flying brand new Airbus narrowbodies.

I believe the 767-300ER is still available for production although the last order have recently been delivered. However production continues on military and freighter variants.
