According to NHL.com player statistics for last year, 40 points puts you at 213 of 1135 active forwards. Meaning only 18% of forwards exceed that threshold.

1135 forwards? 12 forwards x 30 teams is 360...

List includes every forward who played even one game, I imagine.

Can't look at it quite that way though because the 1135 includes too many tweener guys who got injury call up's etc.
There are 180 "Top 6 Forward" roles in the NHL - if 213 players scored 40+ points it means that you should expect your top 6 forwards to score at least 40 points (and maybe 1 3rd liner to hit that production).
That is of course if all the talent was spread equally across the league (which it's not).
It's funny because if you look at the Flames this year the points show a clear hole in the top 6 - which is what we have known all season long.
On pace for 40+ points (Top 6 Production)
Backlund, Tkachuk, Monahan, Gaudreau, Frolik
On pace for 25 - 35 points (3rd line production)
Versteeg, Bennett, Brouwer
On pace for 20-25 points (Strong 4th line production)
Stajan, Ferland, Chiasson

Why use a number that doesn't make any sense and is useless to the argument then?

David Pagnotta @TheFourthPeriod
Islanders are working on a trade involving G Jaroslav Halak. Told, barring a last min set back, he will be traded. At least 3 teams in mix.

Yeah, not sure about that calculation, here's a better one:
40 points
132nd out of 298 forwards who played at least 60 games
44th percentile.
So, 40 points for a guy who plays most of the season is low 2nd line production, good 3rd line production.

You're wrong, something is off.
Even including forwards and defencemen, the number is 898 for last year.

Why? He implicitly stated tweener status in his comment.

Miller is better than Halak. Miller is better than Johnson and Elliott. If we can send a goalie and a 4th, give it a shot.

Pretty sure Edmonton will be one of them. Need an experienced backup for the playoff push.

Hoping Halak isn't coming here...unless we're being paid handsomely to take on his contract (1 year left, 4.5M)

Anyone worried about Miller:
Craig Custance @CraigCustance
These things are fluid but Flames are not on Ryan Miller's 5-team list in which he'd accept a trade.
