So I guess if your point is we should trade a valuable piece to get Strome and then have him get a concussion then awesome but if not then comparing the Seguin deal to trading for Strome would have us moving a very valuable piece like Eriksson was after coming off 3 70+ point seasons and being a very good defensive player.
Umm no it wouldn't because Strome is nowhere near the prospect that Seguin was. Dr Doom wrote why he thought we might be able to take advantage of the Islanders the same way Dallas took advantage of Boston. I said if that was a possibility I'd be all for it.

22 - 6'1 - 200lbs. RHS. high-end skill.

Seems like Strome would be a perfect fit in Calgary, especially if he could shift over and play RW.

I'd imagine the cost would be quite high.

Theres a couple of stud right wingers around the 9/10 spot in the draft this year. Im all for making the playoffs and if we keep playing like we did last night we will, but if not maybe we could land one.

Unless its an extremely deep draft where the player can step in right away, Id be more inclined to try and trade for a 20-22 year old somewhat established player with upside. But that is easier said then done.

That is the downside - we'd be looking at around 2017-18 at best when they could start to contribute. Probably even later than that.

OK, write him off now if you wish. He sucked in October 2014 in Adirondack and was much better the following month.

Lets say the Flames go on a magical run like last year and just out of nowhere are easily pushing for a playoff spot similar to last year.

Knowing Matthews is going 1st overall and many people see the Flames as being as much as a top 5 pick, would you trade the Flames 1st round pick this year for a player or a package equal in value?

No. Too much risk. The value received in exchange for the pick would not be worth taking on that risk IMO, unless it was an absurdly lopsided trade (think Dougie but worse).

This was starting to get discussed in the Stockton Heat thread so I thought I would bring it this thread as well.

Would the Montreal Canadians be interested in home-grown french speaking Emile Poirier?

What kind of return could we see from them? It would be a dream for the Flames to add Devante-Smith Pelly. Big Body, RW, that shoots right. Something that fits perfectly for the needs of Calgary.

Edit: Wonder if they would consier Jiri Hudler half retained?

DSP is a 25-30 pt middle 6 winger. Not trading Poirier for that unless MTL wants to add a lot.

Why would we need another 3rd/4th liner? We are chock full of those. Need top 6 W

I love smith pelley and I'd be pissed if we did that. Poirier can be a top 6 winger still. He needs to be consistent and shoot more. I'd like to keep him and see if he can be our Marchand.

Horrible value for Calgary

I dont know if it's horrible value, but the Flames only make that trade if they project Poirier maxes out as a 3rd liner

I didn't say anything about writing him off. I am saying you are making up him being a "notoriously slow starter" in the AHL. He had 1 slow start, one slow start does not make someone a notoriously slow starter. By that logic Gaudreau and Bennett are notorious slow starters too.

two slow starts actually. He was terrible in the beginning of the 2013-14 season as well, starting the year in the ECHL. He was equally bad in the start of last year until about this time of the season and has been not very good in his starts (his relief appearances though have been good)

It is a thing he needed to work on and still does.

I thought this was fairly well known.

Regardless, I still think Ortio is a keeper, and the best shot of the 3 we have now at the NHL level to be a legit starter in the NHL.

He wasn't terrible to start 2013-14, the Flames wanted Berra in the AHL and couldn't send MacDonald to the ECHL. The options for Ortio were for him to not play or the ECHL, they chose the ECHL. Then was phenomenal in the ECHL to start the year and then was immediately strong when called up to the AHL. Starting in the ECHL for a goaltender does not always equate to being terrible.

I watched him in July 2013 at the development camp and he was the worst of the goalies including the walk-ons. He was also terrible in the training camp. Yes, Berra was likely going to start in the AHL regardless, but his assignment to the ECHL was justified based on his play.
