The NHL season is the primary thing that matters to them. As heads of the business of hockey I would even suggest they are 100% correct to think that way. It is the players who want to play in the Olympics... the players need to understand they are squeezing the entire hockey season PLUS Olympics into the same time frame.

Yes, injury is a risk, but as a player you don't go into anything thinking you'll be injured... they just hope to win the cup and a gold medal in the same season.

Injuries sometimes happen.

That’s part of the complaint. There wouldn’t be a condensed schedule without Olympic participation.

Regardless, the Olympics are fantastic international exposure to NHL quality hockey. It’s stupid for the NHL not to participate even with injuries. They need to think bigger picture.

While playing in a meaningful game to his team and his teammates. A player getting injured at the Olympics is in a nothing game that doesn't mean anything to his team or his teammates. Imagine how the Penguins players feel right now. Or the Oilers, knowing McJesus is wandering the desert until he feels ready to play an NHL game again. I hate what the Olympics has turned into and hate that my favorite sport and league is now supporting that bastardization of the game. A championship game was just decided by a 3-on-3 contest. Brutal made-for-TV bull####.

Sharks have had discussions with the Rangers on Schneider, Stanley with the Jets and are interested in Whitecloud but as sec mentioned the price for him is higher than they are willing at this point. He is a highly coveted player with his salary.

Schneider is a player they are keen on. They are interested in others and these are just some of the names.

Who knows if it's a meaningful game? Maybe the team is already out of the picture. Maybe in alternate universe the player takes a vacation and gets bitten by an eel while snorkeling.

I don't know how the Pens players feel, and neither do you. But plenty of players have come back from international play with better games.

Flames could have an epic trade deadline, going either way. Lots of rumbling about possible deals with supposed big returns, but the market is shifting quickly.

Kadri was high in demand, but there appears to be a number of centers entering the market that will drive buyers in other possible directions. The addition of Pettersen, O'Reilly, Wright, Thomas, Laughton, Stamkos, and Trochek have fattened up the center ice market. With Colorado clearing space it is believed they will jump into the fray and snap up one of the aforementioned centers. The Flames may be left as the fallback position for teams that don't get their primary target. Lots of options out there now, and each player with very different tools and potential fits. Montreal still seems high on Kadri and linked to a possible deal.

Coleman is probably the most likely to be traded. Lots of teams linked to him and need a player of his skills and experience. Probably the best option to get a solid return.

Conroy has to make a decision on his defensemen. Could make a splash with either Weegar or Whitecloud, or he could sit on both.

Could be an awesome deadline with lots of parts moving around, or it could turn into a huge bust as more assets continue to enter the marketplace. Timing is everything and a young GM sometimes misses the market (see last couple of deadlines).

Imagine saying the Olympics is a nothing game. All players that went and represented their respective countries would disagree with you.

It happens every 4 years. If your organization has a top end player in the NHL, the chances that player is selected for his country are high. Ask Crosby if he would do it again. He would.

The Bottom Line:

Coleman is the most likely domino. Kadri is the most complicated. Lomberg, Pachal and Hanley are the depth pieces who could quietly move. Whitecloud and Weegar are staying put unless someone loses their mind.

In other words, expect action, but not a fire sale.
