Hey Weegar would you like to uproot your life for another non-playoff team? Generally when you trade a vet like that it's based on the idea of sending him to a contender to hunt for a cup. Seems like intellectual laziness on the part of the media to say oh he's from Ottawa and therefore he would like to play there.

It isn't lazy, plenty of players want to/ dream of playing for their home town team.
In this case, Ottawa also allegedly wants to take a next step, and has been advertizing that for more than a year. They are closer to being competitive today than Calgary.
I don't see the reason to complain, it is a good fit.

Would love for that as well. But I think it will be a tough sell to the owner. The acquiring team would have to pay a real premium for the flames to retain that much. Even if it meant the flames got another 1st round pick in the deal, that’s a tough conversation with the owner. You’re asking him to pay $10.5 million for what is likely to be a late 1st round pick. If it means they are willing to include an A-level prospect for the retention then maybe it would seem more reasonable.

Many don't. I'm challenging their assumption. Notice who it is - Garrioch, Pagnotta, and Kypreos.

I agree I wouldn’t trade Kadri with retention to simply move the money. To me he becomes our best trade chip at $3.5M and should return more than Lindholm or Andersson or Markstrom which were Conroy’s best veteran sell off moves.

Young centres demand trades all the time. The Flames just haven't had the resources to acquire one historically.
The Flames have a crap load of prospect depth and more incomming. They may find themselves in a position in 2-3 years where they can offer two solid second liners for one slightly better centre.
|
Zegras is going to be 25 in a month, so a whole year younger. And he scores a whole lot less than Thomas - he's about .75 PPG or so. Hayton is worse - he will be 26 next season and is .5 PPG. Cozens just was acquired last season by the Sens, they aren't selling. He's also lesser than Thomas.
Eichel is 29 and going nowhere.
Who is this slightly better centre than Thomas who is going to be for sale in 2-3 years? Thomas is a top 10 centre.

Yeah easy for fans to get in the trap of thinking this is like NHL 26, but this is a lot of money for Edwards to part with. It needs to make sense for him otherwise he won't let Conroy do it.

I dunno.
Weegar looks like he's glowing a bit in some of the interviews where he's asked about being traded. Like he's already had a discussion with family and old friends living in Ottawa and he's excited to go back and see them.
My guess is that there's already been lots of talk with Ottawa. Weegar is aware of it.

I meant a centre who is not better than Thomas now, but younger. I just think Thomas is too old for this rebuild.

Yeah. If you’d get a team like Utah to trade a player like Desnoyers for retaining $3.5 million on Kadri, then you’re presenting it to Edwards as buying the fourth round pick from last year. Of course, I highly doubt Utah would ever do that.

Well, you mentioned Eichel who is older, and a couple guys who are almost as old and who are never going to be better than Thomas.
Plus, only Zegras and Hayton could even realistically be traded. And no one has even mentioned them being for sale.

With the Avs center depth with MacKinnon, Nelson, Drury a more likely target for the Avs may be Coleman would it not?
He would look pretty good on the 3rd line and on the PK in Colorado.

I would not be a fan of Robert Thomas personally. He had 13 hits last year.. and is on pace for less this year. He's very much the if he's not scoring what is he doing for you type of guys, which is partly why St.Louis might be looking to move him

Kadri is obviously better than Drury, so there's that.
Coleman fits on any team though.

Along with the fact that they don't have a first round pick this year should be incentive for them to push to go as far as they can. Give up future picks and hope that the momentum and growth you see this year carries forward. Weegar have years left on his contract means they are not just rental shopping. Think Senators make a ton of sense for Weegar.

Reddit Av's fans all say they have great winger depth and minimal C depth.
They want to push Drury to the 4th line as their other C Parker Kelly plays best on a line with Drury.
Lehkonen-MacK-Necas
Landeskog-Nelson-Nichushkin
Colton-XXXXXX-Olofsson
Kelly-Drury-Kiviranta
Potential return from LTIR: O'Conner (RW)
They seem set at W and really could use a middle 6C.

Hopefully CC can get the Avs 2027 1st round pick.
Then the Flames can pick a player with it and a week later sign Makar.
