Shapo almost had Novak at the ATP Cup last year and Dennis is a much better player today. He will need to have a great service game to have a shot.

Those 5 set wins at a major in the late stages are always so gritty, the mental toughness it takes when it is close in the 5th set is insane. Nice to see the Canadian pull through, hopefully he is right there in the fight in the semi

even if this is very likely, I just don't like reading this type of thing. why is this necessary?

Third set tie-break was needed and Denis gave Novak all he could handle. Whatever happens, it's been a fantastic tennis for Shapo (lest we forget, he almost went out in the first round to Kohlscreiber).

Should I delude myself into thinking he (or anyone for that matter) really has a chance here? Denis has done well to get this far, but he needs to elevate his game to a level we've never seen before....to even have a chance, not even to win. Like should I delude myself into thinking Roger has a chance, even though it looks like father time has finally won? Nah.

aside from the possibility of Denis having his best day at the same time Djoker has his worst, one wrong step/fall, one tweaked shoulder, hell one errant ball to a linesperson's face can easily change everything. this isn't team sports where you need a whole bunch of unlikely things to go wrong for a huge upset to happen.

if you don't believe that, then I guess you don't even need to tune in right?

I would say that I didn't think Milos had much of a chance over Fed back in 2016 in the semi-final, but the big man prevailed in five sets. Now, it is true that Fed picked up an injury in that match that certainly had a big impact, but it will need to be a combination of Denis paying incredibly well and Novak being off for Shapo to make the final.

also, thank you for this patented Senator too-early-declaration. this is exactly what Fed needs to breeze through the next 3 sets, already up a break.

Feel free to call your shot that Denis will win, I'd applaud the bravery.

Winning this match is obviously not what I meant. Of course he'll probably win today, but frankly I don't want to see him get to the final, a 2-2-1 loss is such a sad way to go.

Roger has a chance if Novak is off and Roger is at his peak level. He does not appear to be at his peak level. I actually think Berrettini might have the best chance - he has the tools to win if he can just play at his highest level. A lot like Shapo in that sense, but Berrettini has a better serve and so is more likely to be able to put some pressure on. I could see that happening.

But yeah, the opponents most likely to give Djokovic trouble in this tournament were always "food poisoning" or "getting hit by a truck".

Roger doesn't have a chance lol. I'd love to believe it, but his movement this tournament has been jarring compared to the usual Wimbledon level, and the serve nowhere near the level it needs to be. You have to remember he has had several years serving at God-levels and still lost to Novak.

It's not about calling a Denis victory, more about the declaration there is no point in them playing.

That is your thing so it doesn't bother me too much. You've been wrong on here before plenty, so I always assume it's not meant to be taken very seriously.

Felix with his usual early match struggles.

It's going to be a short day at the office for Felix if Matteo keeps getting the Felix first serve back in play.

It's mostly about respecting Novak, the best player ever who is in one of the best forms he's ever been in. If he showed any weakness in this event I would have some hope, but he's completely dialed in.
