Confirmed. The KHL chartered it to pick up all the Oilers leaving the NHL.

It'll still bulk out and not have enough room to fit all the sweat pants.

Fin 802, their second Dreamliner, has been up flying for a while. It's been doing Halifax-Toronto runs since Thursday.

Her twin fin 801 is on the front page of airliners.net, as is this beast... which is fitting given that, as aforementioned by Bigtime, she is visiting us here in YEG on Friday morning.

Patrick Sojka ‏@psoj4 6m
@FlyYYC just sent out a media advisory for the first plane to land on new runway this Sat. Will it be the rumored Middle Eastern carrier?

Possible touchdown of an Emirates a380 and then a re-take off to it's eventual destination (probably SF or LAX)?

If I paid $20k for an F seat flying DXB-LAX, I'd be irate with a random stop in Calgary. I'll be joining everyone else there to watch whatever comes but man, it doesn't make a lot of sense.

A touch 'n go from an A380 diverting from cruise altitude just to do that? That's madness.

Hope I get to land on it on Sunday when I return, what are my chances?

Depends where you're coming from. From the east (including Denver and Salt Lake) almost guaranteed to be on the new runway (assuming nothing breaks on Saturday, etc.) Because of restricted airspace in southern Nevada, the following end up routing to the east and will almost always be new runway arrivals: Palm Springs, Vegas, Phoenix. Looks like LAX will usually be a west side arrival (comes in over Fairmont Hot Springs, roughly), but I see the odd flight plan in recent weeks where it cuts east and ends up following Vegas flights all the way up to come in over Vulcan, roughly. San Diego seems to be mostly east side with the odd west side as well. Fort McMurray and McKay will be new runway too.

Coming from Edmonton, Vancouver area, Kelowna, etc.... almost guaranteed to not land on it. That's the plan and they're sticking to it, for now. Thanks for mentioning it though cause I hadn't actually thought about exactly what will be going where until just now. Another thing that could happen is, with these routes where they could kinda go either way, the airlines might start filing certain flights over Vulcan and others over the Hot Springs to try to balance it out. We'll have to see how it all goes.

Edit: Anotonov sked arrival 6:19 tomorrow morning here in YEG, apparently. Getting up early, I guess.

The first commercial flight to land on that runway is a WestJet Flight... (I was told but forgot which one)

The first commercial flight to take off from it is AC009

Yeah, Air Canada flight 9, a Boeing 767 to Tokyo which kinda negates everything I just said. But the plan remains for that to be first, as far as I can tell. They're scheduled to push at 1:45 so I guess they'll just hang out till the notam lifts and everyone is ready.

I got sidetracked at work here (don't ask), and I started thinking about the original terminal at the airport. Although well before my time, my mother-in-law insists that the Shell building is the old terminal (with massive modifications, of course). It typically comes up in the "when I came to Canada..." stories.

I know that the terminal was very near to that location, and quite possibly the exact same site, but I don't see any resemblance to the photos of the old terminal that I have seen.

Does anyone know if part of the building was incorporated into the Shell building? Or was the old terminal demolished to make way for it? If it was partially re-used, is there anything interesting and/or historical inside the building?

I suppose, if I'm using my imagination, that little bit that sticks out of the roof on the current building (seen here on Google Earth : https://www.google.ca/maps/@51.10214.../data=!3m1!1e3 ) could be the tower part seen in this old photo :

With the large hangar portions added on each side, of course, after some demolition.

The shell building is a couple blocks from the old terminal.
